Community and Friendship

As a team member today, I think I was more of a follower than a leader. I had some ideas, but I was mainly listening to others plans and trying them. When we were doing The Marble Challenge, I was only a follower, but still a good friend and team leader. As a whole group, we could only come up with one plan, and it was a good one, but it didn’t work. I think it didn’t work because we had the right plan, we just weren’t executing it right. Our plan was to hold the tubes up at an angle and let the marble go through, and once you were sure that the marble had passed through the tube you were holding, you would run up to the front of the line with your tube and hold it there. Our plan was to keep repeating these actions until the marble got inside the cup, but somehow in between it always fell out. We still kept up with this plan even though at the end it still didn’t work and we were out of time. I feel like in this activity, Runyon was the biggest leader.

In our next activity, Hog Call, I think we found it pretty easy. I think I was actually a leader in this one, but still a follower at the same time. The way the game was played was that you had a word taped to your back and once everybody had a word, they had to go around and find a good pair for what was on their back. But, you couldn’t talk and you couldn’t look at the word on your back. So the plan that we came up with as a group was to have people stand in a row, and a few people would start pairing them by their word, and then the people who were already paired, would pair the people that had paired them. This ended up working very well, and we played two rounds successfully.

Our last activity was The Maze. This was very similar to a game we played at Camp Hanes, but it was a little more difficult. There was a mat with 16 squares and we had to find the pattern, and the pattern used up all 16 squares. This was pretty much a guessing game, but it also trained your memory to remember the path. We all helped each other, and Runyon got a piece of paper and wrote out the path, which helped some people, but not all. Overall, I think these three activities helped us work together, and it bonded us well.

Seedfolks Favorite Character

My favorite character is Kim. The reason why I chose her is because I think that she is very resourceful, and she started the whole garden. I think the fact that she started the whole garden is very important because each character chapter has to do with it. Without her, there would not be as interesting a story with all the other characters, which is completely my own opinion. I also think that it is amazing that she is the youngest character in this book, yet she decided to start a garden in a vacant lot filled with junk, and she started the whole story in a way. I also love how she decided to plant the garden in her father’s memory. I think that really shows how much she loves him, even if she was only a small baby when he died. A way I can connect to Kim is that I have my own garden at home. I did not have a special meaning to start the garden, but I still love it.

Housing

  1. Where did the Ancient Egyptians live?
  • They lived in the towns and villages
  • In the Nile valley
  • The poorer people lived in houses wedged in between the wealthier people’s houses.
  • All the houses were made out of mud bricks
  • Royal families and government officials lived in larger cities, though still in the Nile Valley
  • The larger cities were the centers of trade and government business
  1. What were temples, tombs, monuments and houses made up of?
  • Temples, tombs, and monuments were made up of stone so they would last for eternity
  • Egyptian homes were made of mud bricks; they got the mud rom the Nile
  • To make the mud bricks they would shape the mud into rectangular molds and leave them outside in the sun to bake
  1. What type of furniture did the people have?
  • Poorer people had very few furniture pieces, the most they usually had were a table and two beds
  • The poor people usually sat on a mattress or cushion
  • Wealthy people were very large, sometimes two stories high
  • For light they had many lamps, and for natural light they could not use windows because they were not made of glass so they used the slats instead.

If I Could Visit Hogwarts…

If I could visit any place, it would be Hogwarts. Even though it is fictional, ever since I went on the thrill of reading the Harry Potter books, I have wanted to visit this magical wizarding school. The way it was described and projected in the movies, Hogwarts has seemed like a very interesting and exciting school to live, learn, and dine. The first thing I would do when I arrived at Hogwarts, I would take a self-guided tour of the whole castle, visiting every aspect that I could. I would try to meet all the ghosts, all the teachers and students. The main reason I would want to visit Hogwarts is because of the classes. As a visitor, I doubt I would be allowed to go to classes like a student, but I know I would definitely ask to watch some of the classes, and if I could I would be very eager to watch spells be performed up close, and watch potions be brewed.  I would probably be very awestruck and thrilled. I would really like to visit Hogwarts, and if I did, it would probably be the most magical day of life!
