In the first floor of my house, I have a basic kitchen setup as well as a bathroom and work desk. The kitchen is meant to have a single oven, a microwave, a dishwasher, a cooktop on the island, and a dish sink. A fridge would sit next to the stairs, near the bathroom wall. The table seats four somewhat well. The floor size is 14’x13′. The second floor is very simple – it contains a bed, a dresser, a washer, and a dryer. It has windows facing the sunrise, and it is roughly 6’6″x14′. The ‘needs’ of this house are lighting (both natural and artificial), running water, a cooking area, a bathroom, and a sleeping area. Aside from that, the ‘wants’ include a desk and some more kitchen appliances, as well as a washer and dryer (technically wants b/c you can wash clothes with a washboard etc.)

When you first walk up to my front door, you will notice a large covered porch on the right, followed by my electric sports car. In my backyard, you will find a trampoline, hammock, and my garden where I will grow all my own vegetables and herbs.

After walking in, my mud room is on the right. It connects to my covered garage/porch so I can access my storage easily. In the mud room, I have a washer, dryer, and a closet to hang up coats and store shoes.

As you continue to walk through the first floor, my kitchen is on the right. I have a small stool by the window to eat my meals when I’m alone. On the left, I have my family room with a tv and couch. Behind that is my dining room with 4 chairs so when I have guests over, I can accommodate them for dinner.

If you continue to the second floor, you come to my bedroom. I have a desk on the right with my laptop. On the left I have my armoire to keep my clothes in.  You will notice my two queen beds so I can have someone spend the night.

My bathroom is a tile floor with storage space for my toiletries. I have a nice sized shower too.

Needs:

Some type of kitchen to cook and a fridge to keep food cold, toilet, running water, bedroom, washer and dryer, and storage space.

Wants:

Trampoline, hammock, grill, 2 TVs, desk space, and computer.

Walkthrough:

The first aspect of my tiny house is the yard and porch. The porch has a small picnic table for seating, a hammock for relaxing, a grill, and a solar powered heat lamp. This lamp will have a setting to turn the solar energy into either heat or light. This makes it incredibly practical for all seasons. My yard includes a seating area with a large multipurpose, and weather proof screen to make this an enjoyable and comfortable lounge space. My yard had a type of eco-lawn, if you will. It will be watered by the run of from the shower. I will use biodegradable shampoo, so that it’s safe to water the lawn with, but uses no additional water. More on that later!

I have one entry way into my home, which is the front door. With just entry way, it maximizes the amount of useable square feet in my tiny house. On your left is an aquarium, which is definitely a want. On the right is the dining room table, which includes two chairs and a large bay window with bench seating. The bench provides extra storage. This is something I felt like I needed: a designated place to eat, since family dinners are very important in my family. I have a custom kitchen that maximizes space, with things hanging on the walls and extra cabinet space. Across from the kitchen are the stairs, and this is where the washing machine, dryer, and full size refrigerator reside. In hindsight, the full size refrigerator and dryer were wants, but I felt as if the washing machine was a need. Around the corner from the stairs, is a bathroom. It has a large vanity with lots of storage and a toilet. The shower was moved outside and this is where it resides. As I said, the runoff from the shower is used to water the garden. Behind the bathroom, is the guest bedroom/TV room. There is a small twin bunk bed, which a large recliner chair underneath where one can watch TV, or move the chair and it’s a perfect space for games!

Up the stairs is the loft, where my bed is. It is a double bed and that takes up about all the space on this loft. There is a sliding door from my “bedroom” to a small patio with a few chairs and a small table. Opposite of the loft with my bed is the loft with my office. It is a small but designated work space, with lots of storage. This side of the second floor would be accessible with a movable ladder. In-between the two lofts are two steel beams jutting out from the wall. These steel beams can support a hammock, which can be used a another lounge or sleeping place, that will also have a view of the TV, making it multipurpose. One of my favorite parts of the whole house is the ingenuity that’s included, for example, I put 6 incredibly high powered LED lights under each steel beam. The lights will provide additional lighting into the kitchen, below. Upstairs, the needs would be a designated work space, storage and lots of windows do to the slopped roof. The wants would be the patio, the double bed (could be a single!) and the hammock for additional seating.

The final “floor” is the roof, which is covered entirely in solar panels to produce electricity for the house. The house will also use geothermal to be even more environmentally friendly.

When entering through the front door of the house, to your left there is a kitchen with complete appliances to cook and store food.  To your right there is a bathroom with a sink and toilet.  As you enter towards the back of the home couch is set with television and a fireplace.  There is a staircase that will lead to the upstairs of the home.  Upstairs is the main bathroom, filled with another toilet and sink, as well as a shower and a washing machine to clean clothes.  There is also a closet for clothing and storage.  Upstairs there is bed to sleep in.  Outside is a backyard to spend time outdoors.

In my house I have various forms of wants and needs.  The needs that I have available are running water, a shower, a bed to sleep in, a toilet, and somewhere to cook food.  I also have some wants inside of the tiny homes such as a bathroom upstairs and downstairs, a washing machine and a television.

When you walk through the front door of my tiny house you see a little open space next to drawers and a bathroom. I left some open space right in the front of the house so that guests or the person living there has some room to walk in and kind of put stuff down if they want. These drawers are for really anything, but since they are relatively close to the bed, they are intended for things like clothes. Next to the drawers you have the bathroom. It is a small bathroom, but it has all the necessities. It has a shower that is curved to save space instead of having a standard square or rectangular shaped one. On either side of the shower are the sink and the toilet. There is plenty of space in the middle for someone to move around if they needed. The next room over is the “bed room.” this is in quotations because it really isn’t a room. It is a bed with two walls on either side as sort of privacy thing. It kind of keeps the bedroom cleaner by not having access to it from every angle of the house. Next is a small living room area with a TV and a coffee table used as a dining table because I personally think that you don’t need a dining room table. It is just a lot of wasted space. The kitchen area is next to that which as a large fridge and freezer, with an oven and stove. Next is a microwave and the faucet. Despite hours spent looking, I could not find a kitchen sink anywhere, but rather bathroom sinks which I guess could work better than nothing, so that’s why there’s a bathroom sink in my kitchen. I threw in spiral stairs to save space because it goes straight up rather than moving side to side. When you take the stairs upstairs you enter a spacious looking room. This is the office/hangout space. There is a desk an office chair for work and important things that need to get done. For stress relief or just hanging out there is a Foosball table and another TV and recliner couch. Next to the TV is a sliding door to a washer and dryer to save space and not have ugly washer and driers sitting out. There are also lots of windows to help with natural light that way you don’t need a lot of electrical lights.

Needs: Kitchen (appliances), bathroom, bed

I addressed these needs by putting in a refrigerator and freezer to store food which is a basic need. I addressed the need of a bathroom by putting in a place to bath wash and go to the bathroom. Although I could go outside it is much cleaner and more practical to have a bathroom inside. I also needed a bed to sleep on because in this day and age a place to sleep is a need and sleeping on the floor isn’t ideal.

Wants: TVs, reclining chairs, drawers, Foosball, washer and dryer, computer and desk

These are all things that I simply wanted in my tiny house to make my living space more ideal for me. I have TV’s because almost every person in America who owns a home owns a TV. I also wanted reclining chairs to relax. I have a Foosball table because it’s just something fun to do in the house. I realize I don’t need a washer, dryer, computer, and desk but I feel like it is very ideal and almost needed for a house now a days. I could use paper and pens, but almost every place to work requires you to have a computer. I could also wash clothes by hand and hang them on clothing lines, but that just isn’t something that happens anymore.
