Thursday, June 8th – ROOTLE

At my last day with UNC-TV, I had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Kamona Herring who is the Community Engagement Director, and also works closely with the activities for youth. My task was to evaluate the PBS youth story writing competition. There were four groups, kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. Each story was very different, and I enjoyed discovering another aspect of the work that takes place at UNC-TV. Once the decision is made the top three stories in each group will move on to a national competition. Thank you for reading about my great experience!

Tuesday, June 6th – Media Room

I am still exploring, during the day today I discovered a new aspect of the building. The opportunity presented itself for me to see the media room within the editing suite. While a show was being recorded Mrs. Holt-Noel and I watched from the media room. This where I learned who typically sits in the room during the shoot. There will be a graphic designer that is in charge of adding name labels and other graphics at the bottom of the screen. Next, an associate producer is connected to the host, and assists in gearing the conversation and flow of the show. Next to them is the time keeper, and the essentially do as their title says. Lastly, there will be an expert that knows about the topic. This gave me a look at many different jobs in the world of communications.

Monday, June 5th – It’s Video Shoot Day

Today, I got to experience the action. We followed a women that works around the triangle to teach excercise classes to senior citizens. The camera crew focused on getting good shots of Mrs. Linda while she was teaching and interacting with her students before and after class. There was also some moments when Mrs. Linda was interviewed herself. This story was awesome to follow, and it was unique to see the behind the scens work for a production. There was a great mixture of impromptu and planned moments. We followed Mrs. Linda to three different classes, and to pick up her grandkids. This segment will be apart of a series and air on North Carolina NOW.

Friday, June 2nd – Short and Sweet

I am so glad that I have finished my first week at UNC-TV. This week ended with a short day, and was a continuation of yesterday. The only difference is that I was accompanied by Ms. Holt-Noel in the editing suite. After cutting all of the clips, I then got to see how everything is pieced together to make a story. It isn’t complete because many drafts will be made, but we got a basis. Have a great weekend!

Thursday, June 1st – Editing Day

Today was a change in location. For most of the day I was in the editing suite. Mrs. Holt-Noel allowed for me to use Premier Pro, which is an editing software to go through her interviews with a mushroom forager in Asheville, NC. These interviews are going to be used in another segment of. It was very interesting, because when editing the interviews, you have to pay attention to the change in scene, and camera angle to keep everything consistent. Also, there were many times that the same information was given in a different way, so Mrs. Holt-Noel explained to me how to pick the best clip. The most challenging aspect, was working the keyboard. This is due to the many different components and colors on the keyboard. This experience led me to meeting Mr. Peter, but everyone calls him the “editing expert”, and he worked with me on precisely clipping the clips. To me the editing suite is very similar to the computers and editing software the students of Cary Academy use in the film studio.

Wednesday, May 31st – Research, Research, and more Research

As I walked to my desk today, and opened my laptop I was greeted with a long email full of task. Most of my day was spent researching, and learning more about North Carolina. I took away from today that there is a lot going on around me, and I learned about St. Augustine Universities track and field team, and the advancement of STEM. The main takeaway I got from the research is how to write. Often this year we wrote analytically, so it was different to write as a journalist. With the assistance of Mrs. Holt-Noel she communicated the importance of consist writing especially on social media. Next, I learned more about the business side of the job. I got to understand the logistics of organizing rerun shows, and when they air. There is so much more to learn, so that means a lot more research!

Tuesday, May 30th – I Think I Love It

Today, I started with a tour of the UNC-TV building, and I met many people from the hostess to the associate director. I got the opportunity to look at the green room, make-up studio, and sets A and B. There I learned that UNC-TV has one women that builds all the sets for every show. The work than began, I assisted in creating a Facebook post for The Black Issues Forum, which is one of the shows that Mrs. Holt-Noel produces. This post was centered around a social topic, more specifically the North Carolina NAACP engagement in rallying to support healthcare. Next, I did lots of research for Mrs. Holt-Noel to help with her North Carolina Weekend Travel Show. Today, was eventful and educational, and I was even given my own office. Can’t wait for what is next, stay tuned!
