Own Your Learning

As I eased myself into the teak rocking chair, I heard a creak. I think it was the chair, but it could have easily been by knees, or my back, or my neck. I lifted the glass lemonade to my lips as I rocked gently back and forth. I was sitting outside the Cary Academy library, looking down the Quad. Beautiful. The smell of newly trimmed grass and the peacefulness of the scene made me happy. A butterfly floated past, the nearest thing to an interruption of the bliss.

It was the evening before school started. And it was calm, and peaceful, and quiet.

By the next morning it could have been another lifetime. The first day of school brought kids, and booming voices, and kids, and muddy shoes, and more kids. Each one tracking dirt into the buildings … and walking … All. Over. Our. Lawn.

Let me start over.

I haven’t been myself over the past few weeks. I’m feeling a bit grumpy as we start the 2015-2016 school year. Some recent headlines have me acutely feeling the passage of time.

You may have heard the news, too. LOL is dead.

After analyzing posts for a seven-day period, Facebook said that the most common form of online laughter during my youth, LOL (Laugh Out Loud), was dead. It has been replaced by haha or hehe (50% + of users) or an emoji (35%). Fewer than 2% of us still use LOL.

I was in high school in the mid-1980s when LOL first came into existence, part of the first online chat rooms. When texting began, pre-smartphone era, I remember the fun that was had when parents, wanting to be hip but demonstrating their cluelessness, tried to use LOL as a stand in for Lots Of Love. This lead to wonderful texts like: “Dear son, you are kind, and good, and talented. LOL. Mom.”

After almost 20 years working its way from chatrooms to text messages, LOL finally hit the big time in 2011 when it made it into the Oxford English Dictionary. Four years later, gone.

That’s got me feeling my age. And I’m not the only one.

Earlier this summer, I came up to the quad to celebrate with the class of 2005 at their 10-year reunion. They wanted to know what had changed at CA. I talked about how classroom and collaboration work has evolved with the use of laptops, the cloud, Haiku, Veracross, and OneNote. Whoa, whoa, they said. Laptops? Seems like a whole lot has changed since they worked on desktops tethered to tables by lots and lots of wires.

When I shared these observations with our upper school students during convocation, I suspect that many of them put them down to the rantings of a typical out-of-touch old person, somebody who still doesn’t get Snapchat. Like really doesn’t get it.

I guess that’s the point, I told them. My mom didn’t get LOL. She just got her first smartphone this summer. Now LOL is gone, a word lost before its time. Will our current students look back in 10 years and laugh at the way they used to communicate by sending pictures, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pictures. All. Day. Long.

Like I said, I don’t get Snapchat.

Change is really the point, though.

According to the most recent Shift Happens video originally created by Karl Fisch and updated by Scott McLeod (and seen more than 10 million times online), the Department of Labor says that an average adolescent today will have 38 jobs in his or her lifetime. For those in elementary school, 65% could have jobs that don’t even exist yet.

How do schools that were conceived to prepare students for an industrial age cope?

Well, we hope that we prepare students to think.

During the convocation, Upper School Principal Heather Clarkson shared some very important perspectives about how we go about this task. Stanford professor Carol Dweck argues the crucial starting point is believing that we can constantly learn and grow.

During a powerful moment of her talk, Ms. Clarkson asked students to close their eyes and reflect on a personal goal for the year. She asked them, eyes still closed, to raise their hands if their goal was about good grades or doing well on a test. She then asked for hands up if a main goal was about a personal challenge to learn or do something new.

I don’t have to tell you what it looked like in the auditorium during that exchange.

Ms. Clarkson then challenged students to consider that the purpose of school is more than just passing somebody else’s test of their worth. We cannot avoid assessments, but we should not be driven or defined by them. We must embrace our capacity to learn and grow throughout life. As Ms. Clarkson aptly tells students: “Own your learning.”

Several others have been challenging us to see things differently for quite a while. Educator Grant Wiggins, writing in Education Leadership more than 20 years ago, said “the aim of curriculum is to ‘awaken’ not ‘stock’ or ‘train’ the mind.”  Just this past week, the New York Times op-ed section ran a provocative piece on the importance of teaching ignorance.

The recently approved Cary Academy Strategic Plan contains language that challenges us to think about the ways in which education is changing. It challenges us to think about how we use space, how we organize curriculum, and how we help prepare students for an uncertain future.

If Google, a company seemingly on top of the world, feels a need to change — announcing recently the creation of a new organizational structure and parent company called Alphabet — I suspect that change is coming for us all.

Hey, maybe Alphabet can help bring back my beloved LOL.

🙂

PTAA Letter: “And We Are Off…”

With the 2015-2016 Academic Year fully in swing at Cary Academy, I would like to issue a warm welcome from the PTAA.

The following excerpt has been taken from the “Action Plan” I have submitted, emphasizing my priorities as PTAA President for this year.

The Cary Academy PTAA has defined itself, since its inception, as a tool for enhancing the totality of the Cary Academy experience.  As we stand on the verge of our 20th year, we are afforded the foundation of an institution that has already achieved national recognition for ground breaking educational approaches.

Innovative enthusiasm on the part of the PTAA will be a critical piece to sustaining the momentum of Cary Academy in the years to come.

I am fortunate to be surrounded by a team of enthusiastic parent leaders and members of CA Advancement who have been planning and infusing new energy into a diverse range of community activities.  Here are some of the highlights in the near future:

PTAA General Membership Meeting

Thursday, September 10th (noon-1:30 pm) in the Administration Lobby

Topics will include the 2015-16 PTAA budget, PTAA action plan, the SEED project (presented by Jason Franklin) and some student demonstrations that highlight some of the recent PTAA grants. Please come and help fuel the energy and enthusiasm that is surging from within the PTAA.  I plan to have a brief description of the various committees that lie under the umbrella of the PTAA available so that all parents  can explore the best fit for their personal interests/talents within the community.  Please do complete the Cary Academy Time and Talent Survey which recently went out to all members of the Cary Academy Community.

Trimester Parent Coffees

CA Dining Hall, 8-9:00 a.m

Mike Ehrhardt will be our guest speaker and will be sharing information about the recently approved strategic plan, the ways we will organize ourselves to meet the exciting challenges in the plan, and highlight some of the projects lined up for this school year.   Please note that if you have students in multiple grades, the discussion will be largely the same (except for in the 12thgrade).  The dates for the September/October coffees are as follows:

  • 6th Grade: September 10
  • 7th Grade: September 2
  • 8th Grade: October 7
  • 9th Grade: September 24
  • 10th Grade: October 1
  • 11th Grade: October 15th
  • 12th Grade: September 15th

Cary Academy Evening at the Opening Performance of  the Carolina Ballet

Saturday, September 26th

The PTAA Cultural Arts Committee has arranged for a celestial evening with the Carolina Ballet featuring The Planets.  Join fellow Cary Academy families for camaraderie, light fare (in our private reception) and a chance to support Science in the Arts within the greater RTP area. 7:00 pm reception/Curtain at 8:00 pm.  Use the code CHARGERS for your discounted rate of $27!

Fun Fest

September 18, 2015, 3:15-7 pm, field behind the Middle School

This year the PTAA will be providing free Fun Fest t-shirts for all registering students and their siblings.  We will also have a PTAA hospitality tent for parents.  Much thanks to the sponsors who have assisted in making this possible.

Food Trucks

Our Charger Club (the equivalent of our athletic booster club) has arranged for food trucks to be on campus, immediately after school on some of our busiest athletic days (see schedule below). In addition, we are hopeful to debut live student musical performances at the beginning of selected athletic games. Our goal is to promote community as we vigorously support Cary Academy Student-Athletes in an attempt to sustain and promote the current upward momentum of the Athletic Department.  Mark your calendars for these dates in September and October!

Charger Cup

Friday, October 2, 12-3:10 pm.

This annual middle school fun-field event showcases the Blue and Gold teams competing for the coveted “Charger Cup”.  Look for a sign-up genius for the opportunity to be a parent volunteer at this traditional event.

I look forward to meeting many of our new and returning Cary Academy families around campus or at the ballet.  Please know that I welcome all offers of support and service and feel confident that we can make this year a monumental one on so many levels. Feel free to email or phone me with any ideas, questions, or concerns.

Kind Regards,

All School Musical: Info Session Oct. 12

SAVE THE DATE!!

Student & Parent Information Session for the 2015/2016 All-School Musical

Monday, October 12, at 7:00pm

in Berger Hall Theater

All Cary Academy Students interested in participating in this year’s All-School Musical are encouraged to attend this information session with their parents. This brief and informal gathering will give faculty members the chance to answer the many questions that will arise as students consider their involvement and prepare to audition.

The production, its cast, crew, and orchestra requirements, as well as time commitments and volunteer opportunities will be discussed. An overview of rehearsal and production dates will be provided, and audition materials will be distributed.

Important Information

All Cary Academy students are eligible for participation. Auditions will be held October 19 – 21 from 3:30 to 6PM. Callbacks are scheduled for October 26 – 28 from 3:30 to 6PM. Orchestra auditions will take place on November 9. There will be 3 performances in February 2016; dates will be decided by the information session. The Musical is an EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITY; all rehearsals will take place after school, usually from 3:30 to 6PM.

As participation in the play requires the highest commitment on the part of the student, those students who are offered a role will need to choose between the production and other after-school activities during the winter trimester.

Please direct questions to Glen Matthews.

Fun Fest is an annual community building event co-sponsored by the PTAA and the school.

All invited – MS and US students, parents and employees, family members and friends. (Typically 800+ attend this all-school event.) It’s a great time for students to have fun together and for parents to meet.

Parent volunteers are needed to help with set-up, registration, and throughout the event. To sign up, please visit http://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050b4fa8a69-cary

Families join us for Fun Fest, but students may attend on their own and may bring a friend from outside the CA community. The online registration/permission form must be completed for any attendee under 18 who will participate in event activities. CA faculty and staff attend Fun Fest with their families but are there as guests and are not present in a supervisory/care role. Parent volunteers are at the registration table and a couple stations around the MS field.

Fun Fest is a community-building event, not a fundraiser. The $9.00 pp cost for the event is all-inclusive for amusements, games, prizes, snacks and meal. Thanks to sponsors of last year’s PTAA Auction, CA students and siblings registered for/attending Fun Fest will receive an event t-shirt.

New CA Phone Menu Options

Cary Academy has recently change our phone system menu options. This change is to help our community and the outside world reach their destination faster. When calling the school, individuals can choose from the following three options: press #1 for Admissions, press #2 for the Upper or Middle schools, and press #3 for the Administration offices. Callers will then be given options to assist in getting to their desired recipients. For your convenience, please review the phone system “cheat sheet” to find the order sequence for an even faster system response.

Welcome Back to CA 2015-16

Dear Students and Parents,

Hope you and your families are enjoying these last lazy days of summer.

Throughout June and July our many Summer Quest campers kept the energy level high on campus, but we do miss our students. Now the time has come to turn our full attention to the 2015-2016 school year. Our faculty began their work together on August 3, joined by seven new teachers in Spanish, technology, dance, social sciences, math, and science. You’ll learn more in upcoming communication from the divisional heads and a piece in the fall Access newsletter.

Campus changes

In addition to routine painting and repairs, this summer has seen several smaller but significant changes to the campus, including:

  • new student furniture in 11 MS and US classrooms, which is the result of the successful the test project we ran last school year,
  • new brick pavers outside the US building facing the Quad, which is a test of brick that could replace the concrete throughout the internal facing walkways around campus, and
  • a new “community space” across from the US office to support school clubs and service organizations.

Students in the Upper School will notice that faculty members are no longer in their “normal” places. In an effort to increase departmental collaboration and use of classrooms, the Upper School has “rezoned” to create pods for mathematics, English, and social sciences. Teachers will share office spaces, and classrooms will be grouped by department rather than by grade level. Science labs have not been moved, and world languages are still in the SEA. This is a test of some of the concepts that emerged out of our master facilities plan, which will help inform future building remodeling.

The summer also saw many of our faculty members take the opportunity to work on curricular development projects, including: improved grading systems for physics classes, units for robotics and programming in MS science classes, new MS media literacy units, web-based instructional units in US Chinese classes, and the development of blended modules for coursework in architecture, calculus III, and human anatomy and physiology.

On our plate this year

On the heels last year’s upgrades to our Lenovo laptops, Windows 8, and Office365, we are in the process of a significant change to the way we handle school data. At schools, these are called Student Information Systems (SIS), and Cary Academy has been using a system called Blackbaud for many years. That system had reached its “end of life” and was scheduled to be phased out by its developer in the next few years. After an extensive, year-long review, we have begun the switch to a system called Veracross. Like the laptop and cloud migration last year, this change has the potential to be highly disruptive. At minimum, it will change the look and feel of how we all interact with student and family information, such as billing, attendance, grades, schedules, report cards, and transcripts. We believe the overall system will be more reliable and easier for all, but the process of getting comfortable with new procedures will take time. Thank you in advance for your patience.

See you all soon!

On August 12, we will open the school year with 755 students, including 130 new faces. Our employees and seniors will get a chance to personally welcome everybody to the 2015-2016 school year during our Handshake Ceremony held at the end of that first day. Until then, enjoy the last days of summer.

Best wishes,

Mike Ehrhardt
Head of School

Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity

Dear Parents:
I am pleased to let you know about a new enrichment opportunity for parents here in the Cary Academy community: SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity).

The National SEED Project on Inclusive Curriculum is a peer-led professional development program that promotes change through self-reflection and interpersonal dialogue and builds capacity for more equitable curriculum, campuses, and communities. It engages parents, teachers, and community leaders from all types of schools, grade levels, and geographical locations.

SEED seminars are facilitated by teachers who have been trained as SEED leaders. SEED leaders do not lecture. Instead, they lead peers in experiential, interactive activities and conversations often stimulated by films and readings. The monthly seminars deepen participants’ understanding of themselves and expand their knowledge of the world. In each seminar, SEED participants use their own experiences and those of their children to make themselves more effective as partners in their children’s education, and more resilient as parents interested in making their communities and schools more inclusive. SEED values parents’ voices so they can, in turn, better value the voices of their children and their friends and classmates.

Jason Franklin and Kara Caccuitto will be facilitating the seminars for interested parents throughout the school year on the following dates:

  • Thursday 9/24
  • Thursday 10/15
  • Tuesday 10/27
  • Thursday 11/19
  • Thursday 12/3
  • Thursday 1/7
  • Thursday 2/4
  • Thursday 3/17
  • Thursday 4/28
  • Thursday 5/12

The seminars will run from 4:30-7:30.

If you are interested, please contact Kara Caccuitto or Jason Franklin by August 31st, as space is limited.

I hope you will consider joining SEED as part of your commitment to community engagement and our commitment to diversity and inclusion here at Cary Academy.

Watch the CA SEED Project Video

Sincerely,

Jason Franklin
Director of Diversity and Inclusion

3:15-7 pm

Field behind the Middle School

Watch for information and online registration

Start the school year off with an afternoon of fun at one of our largest community-building events, co-sponsored by the school and the PTAA. Join CA students and their families, friends of students, CA employees and their families at Fun Fest, a highlight of every year! This is a great time for students to have fun together and for parents to meet.

  • Amusements open immediately after school. The amusements will again be provided by Orringer Lamm Events. The list of inflatable amusements, games and prizes for this year is being finalized – we’ll include details with forthcoming info. about online registration.
  • We hope the whole family can join us for Fun Fest, but students may attend on their own and may bring a friend from outside the CA community with them to the event. A registration/permission form will need to be submitted for all attendees under 18.
  • An outstanding buffet meal will be provided by Backyard Bistro, 4:30-6:30 pm. Water and snacks such as sno cones, funnel cakes and popcorn will be available immediately after school.
  • More information and registration to come!

Please email Chris Gilmore or call 919-228-4611 with any questions regarding the event or if you can volunteer to help on event day.
