Discovery Term, Exchange Trips, and Work Experience by Darcy Keegan

As the end of the school year approaches, tasks are constantly thrown at students left and right. With AP exams, SAT/ACTs, ERBs, and class tests, students can become swamped with work. At Cary Academy, the last week of May and the first week of June is a break from the constant overload of work. Students are given opportunities to explore, learn, and discover new passions and experiences courtesy of Cary Academy.

Freshmen take part in the beloved Discovery Term, collectively referred to as DT, splitting into groups and taking fun field trips with new or old friends. Students also have the opportunity to create and organize their own DT for their fellow classmates to take part in. There is a wide array of Discovery Terms each year, each with a different focus, ranging from sports medicine and exercise to hiking through the wilderness. Whether students are participating in or leading a DT, they will all be able to develop long-lasting friendships and learn new skills.

Additionally, the exchange trip program, an excursion that many students claim to be the highlight of their Sophomore year, has recently been reintroduced for the Sophomore class. Depending on what language a student takes, they have the opportunity to host a student from Argentina, France, Germany, or China and then stay with their host family during their exchange trip. Bella Sillers, a member of the class of 2026, stated “I am absolutely stoked to get to travel and experience a different part of the world.” Cary Academy ensures that students receive the opportunity to have trips created by a combination of fun and learning.

Juniors, amid APs, SATs, ACTs, and college stress, work with Cary Academy to be placed into a Work Experience opportunity. This occasion allows the class of 2025 to test out their newfound passions, explore what they may want to pursue later in life and participate in real work days under a mentor. These internships last around two weeks and can take place remotely, or both in and out of the triangle. Some groups go to laboratories, courts, veterinary clinics, and more.

Overall, Cary Academy sets aside time for these students to take a break from a life of strictly academics, and experience a new learning environment.
