Flex Day embodies key CA goal: own your learning

By Ella Gupta ’23

A key part of Cary Academy’s schedule overhaul for the 2020-21 school year, Flex Days have given rise to the familiar school saying: Own your own learning. They take place on Wednesdays, when students have no scheduled classes or set commitments. Flex Day is essentially a blank canvas on which students can paint as they wish, with full creative freedom.

Seniors who didn’t have the opportunity to complete Work Experience last year because of COVID-19 might be able to find an internship opportunity and work on Flex Days. Need a day to catch up on schoolwork? Flex Days are for you. As the name suggests, Flex Days are flexible.

Flex Days are the school’s new take on Discovery Term, the two week period at the end of every school year during which Freshmen and Juniors could partake in or create their own student-led course. They provide a time during which students are encouraged to explore their personal interests and passions. Maybe you have a great idea for a startup or want to hike and explore North Carolina. Perhaps you want to use your free day in the middle of the week to participate in community service, go on a scavenger hunt, attend a club meeting at the physical campus, or practice baseball. Whatever you choose to do- the day is yours!
