Asian American Conference by Maya Gupta

On January 31, students at Cary Academy had the privilege of attending the Asian American Conference hosted by Durham Academy, an event that served as a platform for Asian American students from schools around the triangle to come together, share experiences, and celebrate their cultures.

The conference commenced with an inspiring keynote address by NC Senate minority leader Jay Chaudhari, who shared his journey and experiences as an Asian American in politics. His speech set the tone for the day, emphasizing the importance of representation and empowerment within the Asian American community.

Throughout the day, attendees participated in breakout sessions focused on different aspects of Asian culture. From discussions on food, pop culture, stereotypes, clothing, to language, students engaged in meaningful conversations that allowed them to explore and reflect on their shared identities. Despite coming from different backgrounds, attendees quickly found common ground and formed bonds over their cultural heritage and experiences.

One of the highlights of the conference was the opportunity for students to interact with their peers from other schools. These interactions not only fostered new friendships but also provided a sense of validation and belonging for many attendees. Corrine Laurey (’25) notes “Although most of us didn’t know each other in our breakout rooms, we quickly became close, bonding through shared culture and experiences.”

The conference concluded with a reflection session where students had the chance to share insights gained from their breakout sessions and connect with their classmates. The day ended on a delicious note with attendees enjoying a variety of Asian cuisines including Indian, Chinese, and Lebanese food, further celebrating the richness and diversity of Asian cultures.

For many students the conference served as a pivotal moment in their academic journey, providing a space where they felt seen and valued within their schools. It also sparked discussions on ways to further promote Asian American culture and community within their respective educational institutions.

Overall, the Asian American Conference was not only a celebration of culture but also a testament to the strength and resilience of the Asian American community. By coming together, sharing experiences, and fostering connections, attendees left the conference feeling empowered to embrace their identities and advocate for greater representation.
