Afterwards, we watched Inception were reality and what is real and isn’t is questioned. I learned that architecture is really whatever you can create or want to create. Towards the end we had a speaker over about architecture, were I got inspired to learn more about how buildings are made. – Fiona H
Today after lunch, we had a speaker, an architect, who told us about designing schools and other buildings. I was interested to learn that architect’s have to combine multiple subjects together to create a building. They have to utilize their artistic skills, science knowledge, and understanding of the engineering and makeup of buildings. We also got to hear about different aspects of buildings and how they can impact life within them. For example, at CA a lot of the Upper School is made up of glass, which allows for a lot of natural light to come through. Compared to the more closed off hallways the High School building used to have, the glass and openness of the classrooms creates a more “open” and positive learning environment. – Corinne L.
I didn’t think about architecture as an art before but after talking to our guest speaker today I think it is a really cool way to make art. Looking at buildings I don’t see the art in them but I heard all the work and consideration put into making plans is inspiring. I don’t often hear about architecture as a career and it nice to have another option available for me because it is really cool. Even rewatching Inception I noticed how big architecture was in the movie. It was integral to the story. I think that not a lot of people acknowledge how much work is put into the buildings we frequent everyday and it’s nice to hear about the behind the scenes. – Maria S.
For the second half of today, we watched the movie inception. I had never seen this movie before, but it was definitely on my watch list. In a similar fashion to the Matrix, Inception questioned reality, a topic that I find very interesting. It led me to thinking about the philosophical question of can we truly differentiate dream from reality. Afterwards, an architect came in to give a talk which I found enjoyable. I hadn’t really given architecture much thought before, minus how hard and grueling I’ve heard it was. I liked looking at the models that the speaker brought and hearing her talk about what things an architect must consider when designing. The speaker really opened my eyes to the possibilities of architecture, especially in respect to being environmentally friendly. – Ally K
