Day 8- IT

It comes with great sadness that this is my last work experience post. The good thing is, today was by far our favorite day. We were at IT, and at first, we learned all about SAS behind the scenes. The coding is what makes up SAS, and although it was very confusing, it was very interesting. At the end of the day for about an hour, Thuc and I used VR, and it was such an amazing experience. The technology that goes into virtual reality is unbelievable, and we got to experience it first hand. The work experience program with SAS was like no other, and I would do it all over again in a heart beat.

Day 7- Law

Today was one of the most interesting days of the two weeks. At first, I assumed that I would just be talking to many lawyers about the legal side of SAS. I was completely wrong. We talked about the last step in the process of selling software- the terms and conditions. Now, this might rub off as a boring topic, but it was very interesting to see how companies can use the software. It turns out SAS software is just like a lease. Every year you must renew the software, and when this time comes, SAS will go up to 4 months of warning the company after the software expires. This truly demonstrates the amount of respect SAS gives to their customers. Can’t wait for IT tomorrow!

Day 6 – Internal and External Communications

Today was a two in one, which was very interesting. In the morning, we learned about internal communications, which was about the communication inside of SAS. In the afternoon we learned about external communications, which was around the same principles with monitoring communication, but with the outside world. An interesting thing that happened today was the speaker we saw talking about technology and its help in disaster situations. It was crazy to see how simple technology could affect so many lives. For example, a simple app could provide shelter for thousands of people, for many disaster areas do not have the technology or electricity for the app. It was eye opening and made us think about what we could do with our technology for these situations. We are excited for Legal tomorrow!

Day 5- Marketing

Thuc and I thought today was very fun filled. We had a very lengthy intro into marketing, and learned much about it. The most interesting thing I thought was the following that marketing does to their consumers. BY NAME they can see where and how people reached websites. That is how they put in an ad for something one was looking at an hour before. Even though this was very creepy, it still was very useful. On top of this, we went to Goodnight’s rock collection on the top floor of the executive building. It was amazing to see the collection, for it was vast and the most beautiful set of rocks I’ve seen. Can’t wait for tomorrow!

Day 4- Corporate Creative

Thuc and I really enjoyed today. We learned how the graphic design team comes together to create the look of SAS. Even though we were not very interested in graphic design, it was still interesting to learn about what goes on behind the scenes of SAS. We saw the programs they used, and the demos of the designs they make.  Thuc and I got a full tour of SAS as well, and our favorite part was the video production room. Thuc and I went to the room and pretended to be on film, which was a lot of fun. We also saw where the designs are officially printed, and the machines were huge! We could really see how much work is put into these designs. We can’t wait for next week!

Day 3- Finance

Today started with many warnings that it will be dry. Finance isn’t something that is super exciting they told us, but it was still a lot of fun. We learned about FM, or financial management, a program that SAS uses to monitor the money that SAS spends, like where it is spent, and how much is spent. That was the main conversation for today, but one story was with an audit-person that came to speak with us about his job. I asked if there were any consequences with a company misusing their money, and he talked about a SAS scandal and how many people that were well known were fired and jailed because of him. I thought that accounting was all about math and numbers, but it really is about working with people and the budget, and potentially putting people in jail!

Day 2- Sales

Today, Thuc and I learned all about sales. We learned how SAS goes through their process with selling to different companies, and strategies that go along with it. My favorite part about the day was the tour of the campus, for Thuc and I got to hold a meteorite, one part of the many that Dr. Goodnight has. Our host Kristen was only 23 and was already doing very well in SAS, so we got a young perspective on SAS, and how great the company is for their employees. Today was very informing and there was not one boring part! Cannot wait for tomorrow!

Day 1-SAS

Going to SAS today was actually very intriguing. I was just with Thuc and our rep. the entire day, and the topic of discussion was web development. First, we were introduced to the SAS website and all of the things it could do such as sell to clients, teach about the company as a whole, and show ways that SAS helps the community. Then, we were introduced to, and stayed with for the rest of the day, Christiania who was on the web editing team. She edited what was on the website and communicated with many other countries with how to fix problems/ make edits. After explaining how the website works, (which was much more complex that previously thought), Thuc and I actually got to preform tasks that Christiania had to do, and we edited the website by ourselves! It was a very interesting day, and I can’t wait for tomorrow with the Sales and pre-sales day.
