Day 3

I spent the third day of the work experience program learning about marketing and sales and SAS. I arrived at building C at around 9:00, and started off the day by getting a tour around the building. After an hour and a half of walking around and having the opportunity for a Q&A, we met Holton Ramoin, a worker in sales at SAS. We shadowed him for the rest of the day, and he got to teach us the ropes, and really put us through a day in the life of a SAS salesperson. Most of the day we were in his office, and he made phone calls, sent emails, and reached out to different people that may have had an interest in using SAS analytics in their company. He also showed us how they try to expand their presence within a company, and everything that they do to try and expand their brand. Tomorrow, I am excited to see a different aspect of SAS, as I will be in building Q learning about human resources.

Day Three Jamboree

Day Three was chill, but not without intrigue. Today, I decided to conquer the man I nicknamed “The Game Changer,” more commonly known as John Hinckley Jr. His trial where he was cleared by the NGRI plea led to 14 states changing their laws, 4 states abolishing the insanity defense completely and legislation from Congress to top off the massive reform. It is crazy to think how one man sparked so much and yet…so little. These reform laws do nothing to protect the rights of the mentally ill and in many cases, have actively caused extreme consequences. After diving into his tragic life and many other similar cases, it is sometimes hard to keep sympathy at bay. I find it necessary to remind myself of the acts these people committed and center my emotions in order to understand the general public’s concern. Murdering one’s family or attempting to assassinated the president are no minor felonies and I fight to remain objective, while also striving understanding their perspective. It is not an easy balance. Nonetheless, I continue in my journey and will hopefully continue making connections in this study.

Thursday, June 1st – Editing Day

Today was a change in location. For most of the day I was in the editing suite. Mrs. Holt-Noel allowed for me to use Premier Pro, which is an editing software to go through her interviews with a mushroom forager in Asheville, NC. These interviews are going to be used in another segment of. It was very interesting, because when editing the interviews, you have to pay attention to the change in scene, and camera angle to keep everything consistent. Also, there were many times that the same information was given in a different way, so Mrs. Holt-Noel explained to me how to pick the best clip. The most challenging aspect, was working the keyboard. This is due to the many different components and colors on the keyboard. This experience led me to meeting Mr. Peter, but everyone calls him the “editing expert”, and he worked with me on precisely clipping the clips. To me the editing suite is very similar to the computers and editing software the students of Cary Academy use in the film studio.
