On January 5, 16 CA students embarked on an experiential learning trip to Switzerland, expanding their horizons and exploring two fascinating realms—environmental justice and artificial intelligence (AI). Split into two groups, these students experienced a journey of discovery that went beyond the classroom, combining education with unforgettable memories.
The Environmental Justice Group engaged in a series of exciting activities aimed at understanding and promoting sustainable practices. Their adventures included a captivating scavenger hunt through Zürich, unraveling the city’s secrets of sustainability. They explored the intricate balance between urban life and eco-friendliness, gaining valuable insights into how a modern city can be environmentally conscious. Further, the students immersed themselves in the tranquility of botanical gardens, appreciating the importance of preserving green spaces in urban environments. A visit to a chocolate factory added a sweet touch to their exploration, where they learned about ethically sourced cocoa beans and the sustainable practices employed in chocolate production. To round off their experience, the group visited an interactive environmental museum, fostering a deeper understanding of the global challenges and solutions related to environmental issues.
On the other hand, the AI Group delved into the cutting-edge world of artificial intelligence. Students had the unique opportunity to learn from professors, PhD students, and AI app developers. For example, they engaged with the creators of Earkick, an innovative AI app that utilizes AI technology to create an online therapist. Gray Arndts (’25) comments that “One of my favorite AI activites we did was visiting the Lindt Chocolate Factory, where we learned how AI is implemented in the chocolate making process.” Additionally, a visit to ETH Zürich allowed the students to interact with peers who shared valuable insights into the ethical considerations surrounding AI. Discussions revolved around the potential positive impacts of AI, emphasizing what constitutes responsible and ethical use.
Furthermore, both groups converged at the NEST House—a sustainable building predominantly constructed using 3D printing and recycled material. This building reinforces the importance of sustainability and emphasizes how environmental justice and AI can intersect.
After their deep dives into enviromental justice or AI, CA students were privileged to participate in the Youth Forum Switzerland, a dynamic platform where the convergence of sustainability and artificial intelligence took center stage. Engaging with prominent speakers, the students delved into insightful discussions about pressing global issues. The forum facilitated interactive impact labs, providing a hands-on experience that encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving. Diverse panels covered topics ranging from sustainable agriculture and innovation in medicine to conflict resolution, offering a comprehensive view of how the youth can contribute to positive change in these crucial areas. This immersive forum not only broadened the students’ perspectives but also empowered them to envision their roles in shaping a more sustainable and technologically advanced future.
As they return home, these students bring with them a richer perspective and a determination to apply what they’ve learned to make a positive impact on CA.
