On May 20, 2023, Cary Academy students were seen boarding planes as they embarked on trips to Argentina, France, and Germany. The two-week excursions sparked lifelong memories, broadened horizons, and left an enduring impact, which shaped student’s worldview in ways that only true cultural immersion can achieve. Students who participated were provided with a transformative experience that offered them a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture, language, and way of life. It was a journey that went beyond sightseeing, diving into the heart of a foreign community, improving foreign language speaking abilities, and most importantly, making lifelong connections.
The journey began by exploring different cities filled with history, tradition, and diversity. Students had the chance to learn exciting history, see beautiful landscape, and eating local cuisine.
As students settled into their host families, they became welcomed into their communities. From that point forward, the immersion went beyond the tourist experience, diving into the lives of the host families, their traditions, customs, and daily activities. From sharing meals to participating in local festivities, students were woven into their host families’ lives. Spanish student Mirella DiGiulio (’25) remarked, “I am so happy I got to go on this trip. I learned so much about Spanish culture and will never forget the memories and relationships I made.”
Another important aspect was the academic component. Students attended classes in the host schools, gaining firsthand experience of the education system abroad. They were exposed to new teaching methods, interacted with local students, and participated in extracurricular activities. It was an interactive learning environment that helped students get a feel for school-life. As the trip continued to unfold, students faced various challenges. However, it was the navigation of these hurdles where they gained valuable skills.
Upon returning home, students will always have shared stories and the memories they made along the way.
