Cars of the Future?

What if folks had opted to develop and perfect electric cars back when they were invented (in the 1800s)?

This group will spend part of the day enjoying racing electric go-karts, and the other part of the day learning about the pros and cons of switching over to electric vehicles.

Spaced Out

This group of senior scholars will spend the morning learning about space and the the afternoon at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. There’s a LOT to learn!

PPT Rap Skillz

We are planning on making powerpoints for each other to blindly present in order to improve our off-the-cuff presentational skills and general improvisation skills, as they’re quite important in nearly all career paths.

We will explore the Living Conservatory in Raleigh, where we can view and learn about tropical animals and plants, and enjoy the Magic Wing Butterfly House and Bayer Insectarium.

How does viewing and learning about endangered and foreign animals/plants affect our view on the importance of environmental conservation? What can we do to support environmental conservation? How can we eliminate potential sources of harm to the environment from our daily lives?

One Charger’s Trash…

Trillions of pounds of trash are thrown into landfills every year. The mantra “Reduce Reuse Recycle!” has been thrown around on Earth Day and in science class, but most people don’t truly follow the advice. Thrift stores have become increasingly popular as people scour to find designer brands at a fraction of the cost, but that’s just clothes. Trash includes materials such as metal, plastics, and paper, all materials that can be recycled – or upcycled. For our X-Day, we’re going to the Durham Scrap Exchange, where we will  select some discarded items, then make a treasure out of trash.

Hiking in Western NC

Hannah writes: “North Carolina boasts a variety of ecosystems varying from expansive mountain ranges to beautiful beaches. We have explored so little of what this breathtaking state has to offer, so along with focusing on nature preservation, we want to spend the day outside on a hike through one of our state’s many national parks, Hanging Rock State Park. As we hike to the summit, we will observe the natural flora and fauna, take in the changing colors of the leaves, and practice “Leave No Trace” in order to fully understand, appreciate, and preserve our parks.”

– What does it mean to “Leave No Trace”?
– What has been the effect of invasive species on native North Carolina wildlife?
– How can we work towards preserving nature in our everyday lives?

This group will spend X Day Nov 9 fishing at Lake Johnson. In addition to catching different species of fish, they write: “We will examine variables like P.H., temperature, algal state of the water and mercury concentration and see how they affect the size, behavior and appearance of typical sport fish like bass, channel cat and anything else we might catch.” Sounds fun and interesting! They will post here, to verify their “fish stories”…
