Painting the tote bags was really fun because I could see everyone’s art styles and what they wanted to paint. It was a lot easier than the glass painting but I l chose to believe that is because I’m better at mixing colors now than I was before. I also liked writing the thank you letter because it was nice to look back at all we did. It was very fun to go through this DT and meet new people I wouldn’t hangout with normally. I think my favorite part of the Discovery Term was going to Carrboro and seeing art in different place like Erwin and the gardens and architecture. This DT was extremely fun and a great way to end the year. – Maria S.

Today started out with painting tote bags. The blank tote bags meant it was a blank canvas to paint anything, and yet, I couldn’t pick anything to paint because there were so many options. I finally settled on painting Appa, the flying bison from Avatar. Although the beginning of the process was an indecisive person’s nightmare, I learned to narrow down my choices and to settle with one picture.  – Fiona H.

In the morning, we painted tote bags. Today had been a day I was excited about since hearing we were doing it — I had never made my own tote bag. I’m not going to lie; my tote bag did not turn out the way I had envisioned it, it felt rushed. While you could categorize it as a fail, I would say it’s something that made me pause and think about what we have done this past week. I’ve learned that art is a reflection of the artist, no matter good or bad. My bag is a reflection of how I felt going into the project: part over-confident and part confused. Even though it did not look the way I wanted it to, the lesson was one I had yet to encounter, and now one I have begun to learn: The quality of your project depends on what you, as an artist, are willing to give it. – Milena C

Today we started the same way we’ve started many days. We played the emoji game. It’s become a part of our Discovery Term and it’s helped people become more familiar and open up with each other. The game fuels a lot of creativity, and we all have a really good time playing in general. Once we wrapped that up, we came up with designs we wanted to paint onto tote bags. I chose to paint both sides, each relating back to the music that I like. I painted the first side the album cover of Twin Fantasy, and the second a cassette player with a cassette tape and headphones attached. Both were things that I connected to and while I liked the second side, I’ll sew something that I made earlier over it to make the tote bag look more cohesive. Painting on the tote bags, like painting on glass is hard. It’s hard to erase the pencil, and painted mistakes can’t be that easily covered unless you plan to paint the entire bag, it also has a rough texture that doesn’t take to the acrylic well, so confidence is key with this process. With that said, I think that once I figured it all out, mine turned out well and I’ll use it in the future. – Angie E.

We also hosted a championship consisting of a Kahoot and intense game of Pictionary. Congrats Team Erwin for winning the Championship!
