My favorite parts of today were our trips to the gardens, both that of UNC and the botanical one. Not only did I see a lot of wildlife, including a squirrel who got a little too close for comfort, I also saw some not-so-wild life, like the dogs who passed by and said hello. Even though I couldn’t get pictures of any dogs, I did manage one of a squirrel. The nature was amazing, too. At UNC we sat near a small creek to eat and then walked around the park. At the botanical gardens, we explored the herbs and the medicinal, poisonous, and carnivorous plants. Despite the inability to sketch and make art today, this little trip helped me appreciate the art that has already been made in nature! – Milena C.

Today we went on a field trip to visit different art related places in Carrboro. We started off the day by visiting the town hall, and then shopping at a craft store. We then went to a few different stores and got to see handmade clothes, fragrances, and then went to get food (pizza)! After lunch in the UNC Chapel Hill gardens and taking photos of plants to sketch, we went to an art gallery/museum and got to see artifacts, paintings, sculptures, and more. Then at last we went to see the North Carolina Botanical Gardens. Today after visiting the many shops and scenic locations I realized that we had seen a very wide variety of art; handstitched clothing, paintings from centuries ago, and modern exhibits at the museum were among many. But what I realized was that each piece of art shared a story that could be interpreted hundreds of different ways. This made me realize how stories can influence people in slightly different ways, and paint new stories that others continue to keep with them for the rest of their lives. – Corinne L.

Walking around the UNC campus and Carrboro and seeing how the people made it their own through art was really cool. Just seeing paintings on the sides of buildings was interesting and I could see the effort and entail put into it. I really enjoyed seeing the art museum because of all the different styles of art and how each made me feel different emotions. But the thing I though was the coolest was how people made art into their living. Going around different stores and seeing all the clothing or pins or stickers people made was so fun. Being able to do something you love for a living is really cool. – Maria S.

Today started out with visiting a town hall. Over there, I learned from Dr. Coven that elm trees are really rare because of the Dutch Elm disease. Afterwards, we went to the craft gallery where I bought an embroidery kit to learn how to embroider. We then went to the nearby mall that used to be a textile mill. Afterwards, we all went to Franklin street, where we learned to compromise on what to eat. Then, we went to the Ackland museum in which I learned more about the origins of the museum and the history behind some of the art here. Finally, we went to the botanical gardens where I finally understood to difference between poisonous and toxic. – Fiona H.
