Hey everyone,
We didn’t get to go to Wilmington today due to bad weather, so instead we watched a documentary on the Wilmington Insurrection of 1898. The Wilmington Insurrection is a topic that doesn’t get enough coverage, and isn’t covered in-depth in schools. In 1898, Wilmington was a major city in North Carolina and had a substantial Black population–in fact, it is believed that Black people were the majority. Much like a Black wall street, Black businesses thrived and Black people were able to obtain positions of power (doctors, lawyers, law officials, etc.) However, in 1898 white supremacists led by Alfred Moore Waddell planned and executed a coup d’état of the Republican party, ran many Black people out of town, and instated a democratic government favoring white supremacy.
