Because we were unable to watch our usual Lovecraft episodes on Monday, we kicked off Tuesday with 3 episodes. While episode 7 which explored women’s creativity and expression was Ms. Eason’s favorite, episode 8 titled “Jig-a-Bobo” is mine. Episode 8 covered the aftermath and funeral of Emmett Till, who’s real life nickname was “Bobo.” One of the characters in the series, Diana, takes his death harshly and eventually ends up being haunted/pursued by two young Black girls called Topsy and Bopsy. Topsy is a reference to an enslaved girl in the 1852 novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” The novel was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe a white abolitionist who was trying to advocate for the abolishment of slavery; however, the novel presented a litany of racial stereotypes such as depicting Black children (like Topsy) as mischievous, with big lips, and unkempt hair.
