On our way to the US National Whitewater Center, we found many ways to pass the 2.5 hour journey. The bus ride there was quite eventful, to say the least. At first, it seemed everyone was at a loss. There was nothing but the whir of bus engines roaring around us and the landscape barren with cars speeding along the highway to keep these listless students company.
However, the day was saved by one single (or perhaps 52) object (s): a standard deck of 52 cards. Maggie and Isabel began with an altered version of Uno, which ended quite tragically among with a loss of interest. Then the situation escalated with Anna and Mehtie behind us, who offered a new sort of game: War. It was much more fun than Uno: not only was the game a change of pace, but also with four people instead of two. Yet, at the end of the first round, Mehitabel tentatively suggested a new game: Egyptian War. Thus, began quite possible the most exhilarating battle of cards ever held in Bus 12. This new battlefield of being held at the mercy of probability and combinatoric luck along with the reflexes of hand-eye coordination commanded the attention of these four students. And then we arrived.
