Additionally, on Tuesday, we watched an episode of Lovecraft covering the 1921 Tulsa Massacre. May 31-June 1st marked the 100 year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Riots. In the span of these two days, Greenwood Avenue in Tulsa (commonly referred to as “Black Wall Street”) raided, burned down, and destroyed by a violent white supremacist mob. It’s estimated that 300 Black people died, and 10,000 were left homeless and destitute (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/05/31/a-proclamation-on-day-of-remembrance-100-years-after-the-1921-tulsa-race-massacre/). Furthermore, Greenwood was redlined (marked so that insurers knew not to provide insurance and mortgages to these communities) and policies were erected to make it harder for this community to rebuild.
