Last Wednesday, we headed out for our three-day camping adventure in Brevard, NC. Once students arrived, we piled on to the bus and drove 4.5 hours to our campsite where we set up camp using our tarp plans from the previous day. Then we explored some waterfalls near Brevard. Then we went back to camp. Then we made a fire. Then we discussed the day’s activities around that fire, centering our discussion around the following prompt: “What is wild?” We asked if the campsite we were in was wild or if we have ever really been in the wild. Then we went to bed. The next day, we went on a 6-mile hike to the top of Looking Glass Rock. The rest of the day was spent on other short hikes and visits to/swims at waterfalls and creeks. In the afternoon, we went on an insightful tour at the Fish Hatchery. We saw thousands of little fish and talked about whether those fish were truly “wild” and whether any fish are truly wild. This helped to ground our experience and it tied back to the Patagonia documentary Artifishal that we watched the Tuesday before. Then we headed back to camp for the night. The next morning, we woke up, broke down camp and headed home.
