Today we had the opportunity to explore foods from the Ethiopian part of Africa. First, Selam Meherete and her daughter came to speak with us about Ethiopian food. Mehitabel (’24) is Ms. Meherete’s niece. We watched another episode of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown in which Ethiopian culture and cuisine was explored alongside special guest Marcus Samuelsson. We also watched an episode of High on the Hog, which explored some other parts of Africa with a focus on roots of African American cuisine and the slave trade.
For lunch, we went to Nafkot Ethiopian Restaurant and ate injera, a sponge-like bread, along with a few dishes including beef tibs, kitfo, (insert other dishes). Injera which is a spongy bread that looks like a pancake and is the base of almost every Ethiopian meal. We also learned that all Ethiopian foods are eaten by hand as we ate our own meals by hand at Nafkot. Overall it was a very interesting and fun experience to try a new food like this.
