Today we learned all about Italian food and culture. The first thing we did was listen to Mr. Velto present about his Italian heritage and the differences in cooking between the North and South of Italy. The North of Italy is good for farming were as the South relies heavily on sea food. The North of Italy uses flour as the base for their pasta were as the south uses semolina flour this is a hardier and firmer type of flour. Towards the North of Italy there was more of an influence from the east. Thus in the North rice is commonly used to make a dish like risotto. We learned about various type of cheese and pasta, as well as how pasta and macaroni are to generic names for the same types of noodles you could say. They say that in Italy there are over 300 different types of cheese a few that I tried today consisted of parmigiana reggiano, pecorino romano, and a sharp aged provolone. Our snack today also included two different types of dry sausage and an Amaretti cookie. We learned about various type of cheese and pasta, as well as how pasta and macaroni are to generic names for the same types of noodles you could say. Now I would love to talk about my absolutely stunning lunch. We went to Bella Monica owned by Stella Monica’s (’22) parents.
I ordered a pizza crust stuffed with cheese, caramelized onions, sausage, and peperoni folded on top of itself. It was absolutely delicious. The food was amazing and very authentic. After returning from our adventure we had some free time and after watched Anthony Bourdain talk about the food from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. We learned many different things about Italian food today while enjoying some authentic food.
