Picture of a Map of Durham highlighting the separation between Black and white communities. As well as locations of garbage dumps, incinerators to the west so the wind would blow it east towards the Black communities, locations of community centers, etc.

Fun fact: Most of our group found out on Wednesday that Durham was known as a “Black Wall Street” or area in which many Black people were able to prosper. The Hayti community in Durham saw the establishment of North Carolina Central University (an HBCU), the Royal Ice Cream Counter Sit-in, the construction of the NC Mutual Life building (a black-owned insurance company and tallest building in Durham at the time), etc.
