Gimghoul Castle at UNC
Still on day 2 and secret societies, we researched Gimghoul Castle and its secret society, “The Order of Gimghoul.” Legend has it that an 18-year-old named Peter Gromgoole competed in a pistol duel for the affection of Miss Fanny only to lose his life in that very duel. In some versions of the legend, Gromgoole’s body is hidden under a rock (which still has his blood stain on it) to cover up the murder; a second account mentions that Fanny arrived just as Gromgoole was shot and he lay dying in her arms. Lastly, a third account says she wasn’t present at the scene, but returned to the castle daily waiting for her lost love. This legend remains an interesting discussion topic on UNC’s campus and even inspired the “Order of Gimghoul’s” name.
