Finally wrapping up day 2! Last thing of the day was a tour of Stagville Plantation in Durham, NC. Stagville was owned by the Cameron family–the ones who built/founded Cameron village–and was the largest plantation in NC with close to 1000 slaves. The Cameron family owned nearly 50 square miles of land and had an ever-expanding empire. After emancipation, some enslaved people left the plantation immediately; however, it became a major agricultural area and, so many Black people were coerced into signing sharecropping contracts so they had an income coming in.
