This morning, Mr. Rushin performed a “pack deconstruct”, which just means that he showed us how he strategically packs each item. We marvelled at his clever methods of using his gear and his ability to fit everything in one backpack.
Then, we drove to Falls Lake for our day hike, but of course, us wilderness enthusiasts could not avoid some drama. As he was making a U-turn to reach our parking spot, Mr. Rushin made a declaration that would become the difference between life and death for a special individual: he spotted a baby turtle walking into the busy road, waiting to become roadkill. But we had no time to worry — our hero, Coach Hall, jumped out of the bus, picked up the turtle and brought it to safely rest on the grass, barely avoiding oncoming traffic. His heroic actions have inspired us for the rest of Outdoors Club history.
In other, less significant news, we did an 8-mile hike at Falls Lake, stopping in the middle to do another open-water swim to reach a boulder. Some of our brave participants then enjoyed some boulder jumping before we swam back, frantically waved our arms at multiple boats passing by in order to not get run over, ate lunch, and headed back home.
