Today our focus was on German culture and foods. Our day started with an introduction from Louisa and her Father about typical German life. We heard of the differences in typical German eating, as they eat a big lunch and a small dinner and in America, we tend to follow the opposite. We then watched an episode of Driven By Food with Andrew Zimmern, going all over different parts of Germany. We followed them to different places that are a big part of their History such as huge public pools, covered by hundreds of windows, and the wall that used to divide Germany, covered in famous artist depictions of all kinds of emotions and feelings. Following the video we got to try Apfelstrudel, Pretzels with German mustard, and Haribo gummy bears, all foods originating form Germany.
After a quick break, we got to go to Brier Creek Beer Garden and try some authentic German Foods, like smoked sausages and sauerkraut, a Reuben Sandwich with crispy potatoes (which was delicious), and a range of different meat filled pies.
Heading back to CA, we followed the delicious meal with a quick episode of Anthony Bourdain and his experiences in Cologne Germany. Learning about Germany’s struggle with accepting immigrants, along with some pro and cons that came with it. We also learned about the traditional festivities that was unique to Cologne Germany.
