Day 3 – Meetings, Deliverables, and Networking

I started off my day bright and early per usual with an 8am meeting with Crystal and Rachele, who focus on roadmapping. I viewed their past quarterly roadmap, learned a little about the process, usage, and plans to digitize into an interactive online format. Later in the morning I also met with Shelly, our marketing consultant. She shared with me a little bit about her job organizing and planning trade shows and conferences. My third meeting of the day was with Mary Edwards, the Senior Vice President, who shared with me a bit about her background, as well as offered me excellent advice for designing and facilitating development in my career. Tina (VP Manager of group) and Liz (Manager of product) also treated Adam (my fellow intern) and myself to lunch today, where we got to discuss a bit about my time here, future aspirations, summer plans, etc.

Upon my return from lunch I met with Beth (Senior Copywriter), who explained her writing, editing, and proofing responsibilities, as well as gave me some advice for writing in a business style. I also met again with Liz to debrief on my visit to HM Document Solutions (the print shop) tomorrow, where the conversation morphed into narrowing down my interests, and consequently making a rough career plan for me. I am very excited for my future plans! In my free time between meetings throughout the day, I worked on updating the HMHS website content from its 2.0 to 3.0 version. I also ended up staying 45 minutes late after work today, where I went up into the tower and got the chance to do some networking with some company leaders!

Walk West: Day 3

Once again my day started at 10am. From the moment I walked into the office today, there were tasks for me to complete. Today I got to see the side to Communications that I had expected to see coming into this internship. This morning I reunited with my good friend Excel. I organized a long list of clients and emails from specific sectors of companies to make their information more accessible. This meant that if Walk West wanted to reach out (for a client) and contact these people, they could easily do so. Once I completed that, I moved on to researching some information for my desk neighbor — Andrew. Andrew just moved to full time at the company after being an intern for a couple months, so probably understands the struggle of being young and new! I had to research SEO. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which basically means how do you rank a video or website higher up when you search something. So on Google, how do you get your website to show up first when someone searches something related to your website. A bit after lunch time we all gathered in a large meeting room to celebrate someone’s last day. There was some delicious cake and cookies to snack on while everyone sat down and took a short break to chat. My aunt and uncle are actually friends with the founder and head of governmental affairs sect of the company, so they had asked them to embarrass me and sing me happy birthday at some point. We then talked about stories about my relatives, football, and other non-work related things. For a little I was quizzed on if I knew people from shows like the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Saved by the Bell, and Full House. Since I am significantly younger than most of the people in the office, they find it funny that I have no clue what some things are. After, I scheduled social media posts! I found this particularly interesting; Instead of having to post for clients the day of, they schedule them out to be posted for a certain day and time on specific platforms based upon finding on when is the best time to post. At 3 o’clock Andrew and I watched a webinar on a new “app” or platform they are using where they can see where people are clicking based on heat maps and other typical feature such as polls, etc. After a pretty successful day, I headed home waiting for the next day.

Day 3 – Planning

I started out my day, getting to SAS 15 minutes earlier than usual, at 9:45 a.m., to meet Jennifer Chase, one of the Global Partner Marketing Managers. We talked with her a little bit to hear about her job. After this I met with Alli Soule. Allie runs the SAS social media and uses different technologies like HootSuite and Sprinkle to monitor what is going on all over social media. She explained different terms likes “Social Listener,” “Social Monitoring and Response Team,” “Employee Advocacy,” and “Influencer Marketing.” She explained how all of these work and have an impact on sales/marketing. She also mentioned with the uproar in social media within the past few years, the laws aren’t able to keep up with it. Just recently the U.K. passed a law called the GDPR which deals with privacy in social media. After meeting with Allie, I drove over to 940 NW Cary Parkway. Here, is where the social monitoring and response team is located. There are a bunch of people sitting in their offices answering chats, calls, and tweets, and emails sent to SAS. They get a notification anytime SAS is mentioned, where they can reply to the social media device that it is sent to. On top of this, they also monitor Dr. Goodnight’s person social media accounts.

During lunch, Liz and I ate with Kate, a marketing intern from Elon and we discussed the college process/internships in college/majors in college. It was very helpful because Kate and I discussed all the different paths. It was also really nice because Kate is originally from Cary, so we had a lot in common. After lunch, I listened to a conference call Liz had on the upcoming webinar. The call was in the early stages of the planning process, but it was nice to hear about it because this was a project Liz and I had been working on a little bit each day. After the conference call, I sat in on a meeting with about 25 people, planning an upcoming event in San Diego. This meeting was also in the more earlier stages of the planning process, but it was interesting to see how all of the different departments planned, talked, and worked together.

Day 3!

Day 3 was a lot like the other days, research and more research. We arrived back at the office around 9:30 this morning and began completing more research about car dealerships! I now know more about car dealerships than I ever have before! While completing all this research I learned that much of the work that is done in the marketing world is about research and finding the data to enhance the product to make it sell better. We were talked through how this data that we are collecting now is going to later help sell the product, CarTrax. By collecting data about all the car dealerships in North Carolina, they can then break it down to determine the best and easiest way to go about selling the product to all the different car dealerships in Raleigh and in North Carolina. We are just completing one step to the equation in the larger scale of marketing in a whole. Tomorrow is our last day at the Entigral office and we will be breaking down our week here with Mr Self.

Day 2

Today, Jonathon and I arrived back at the entigral office around 9:30 this morning. We right away began by completing more research, as Mr. Self asked us to go further into our research that we completed yesterday. Much of what is done in this office is research that can later be used to sell the product, very different then what I was expecting. We also created a proposal powerpoint that Mr. Self can use for introducing the product to any other car dealership. While Jonathon took over the task of collecting data from the car dealerships all over North Carolina (there’s a lot), I worked on completing a spreadsheet that included all the car dealership associations in the 50 states. It turned out to be very difficult to find the president, phone number, and the number of dealerships represented by the dealerships of these associations. We also grabbed some food at a nice food truck across the street. It was a very full day! This is a picture of one of the data sheets that we have been collecting both days.

Day 2 – First Real Work Assignment

I started off the day meeting with Liz, who is the manager of product, and Adam, my peer intern in the office. We discussed a bit more about the company on the customer end of things with conferences and trade shows. Then I met with Kris, the senior marketing consultant, who elaborated on surveys during trade shows and conferences. She gave me some surveys from the past conference in San Antonio, Texas which I organized and filed. I then met with Mo, the contract management consultant, who deals with the legal side of the marketing team. There I learned about SOWs and MSAs which are the documents outlined with customers through contract administration and compose a general contract. He also deals with delegate authority agreements, which is the government involvement side of health care. After my meetings ended, I organized some documents and filed them for April, a member of the marketing team. Then I had a meeting with Namrita, the product marketing consultant, who produces Flash documents: a written monthly compilation of new products, trends, announcements from competitor companies or the market in general.

After my lunch break, where I walked down a few blocks to a local restaurant, I returned to the office and had a meeting with Tina, Liz, and Kris. There we reviewed a heatmap, a document which diagrams HMHS’s offerings to customers and prospective customers. Thereafter I wrote a RFP (request for proposal) which is a request send to prospect vendors that could offer potential support to the larger HMHS company. Within the document, I outlined HMHS and RFP review, RFP instructions, HMHS scope of work, all of which are meant to leverage agency support to develop marketing strategy. I wrote the document for the rest of the work day in the office until 4:30, then finished it up in the hotel to email off to Tina and Liz for further review tomorrow morning. I also spent some time tonight preparing questions and organizing my thoughts for my meeting tomorrow with Mary Edwards who is the Senior Vice President of Commercial Markets.

*The second photo is of my schedule, and is meant to demonstrate the dynamic nature of the office, and how fluid and ever-changing meetings are.

Day 2 – Spreadsheets and Busy Days Ahead

Today was somewhat of a slow day at the office for me, but it gave me the chance to really observe the work and chaos happening all around me. Between spreadsheets of revenues made from the past 2017-2018 season of concerts, I would overhear the conversations about the newest publications and what they need to be able to sell tickets. I learned the importance of less words the better as well as always having a target audience in mind. The NC Symphony, in hopes of finding better ways to sell tickets for the Summer Fest activities, focuses on finding deals and events for families, deals that discount the tickets to make sure the entire family can get out and enjoy the music. Over the sound of spreading papers in the copier room, I could hear the various conversations about what colors work well together and can create a more cohesive pamphlet to get people’s interest sparked for the upcoming season.

Tomorrow will be my first day working a Summer Fest Event, and although I am sure I will not be doing the most important tasks around the venue, I am excited to see how the community interacts and impacts the work done in the office.

Day 2 – Marketing and Listing Appointments

Today was a complete different experience than yesterday, and it was great! Tommy and I started our day off at 10:30am with a brief review of 919 realty’s social media like instagram and twitter. We decided to take on the task of revamping their social media because Mrs. Burkett felt like our young knowledge would be useful in making their social media more attractive to the younger generation who are buying these new family homes to live in. Mrs. Burkett also assigned us a fun task of creating a calendar, we would put days in the calendar to boost spirit in the office like chocolate day or pajama day. After our morning of marketing Tommy and I drove to our first listing appointment where we met Mrs. Dona. Tommy and I learned so much about preparing your house for selling, how to find the right price for your house, how the market is reacting now, and how little housing there is in the triangle. It was very interesting and Mrs. Dona’s client was kind enough to let us sit in the meeting and see her beautiful home and what renovations, if any, she needed to do in order to prepare for selling. Today was an exciting day, and I cant wait for tomorrow!

Day 2 – Meeting New People

I started out my day by arriving to building C of SAS at 10:00. The first thing I did was meet with a woman named Courtney Vigil. Courtney has one of the coolest jobs I’ve heard of. Her official title is “Global Social Selling.” Basically, Courtney travels to all different countries meeting at the SAS headquarters teaching their sales employees how to use LinkdIn. In the two years she has been working with SAS she has traveled to over 37 different countries. Courtney was telling me how important it is to be on social media and stay active. She also showed me a software that they use that shows how effective her meetings are and in each of the different countries what an impact it has on them. The countries that are not as successful are the ones that she focuses more on. Next week she is traveling to Dubai and Mumbai, and the week after she’ll be in Johannesburg, Africa.

After meeting with Courtney, I met with a woman named Beth Bullard. Beth works in digital marketing and deals with digital advertisements. It was interesting to hear Beth’s perspective on how the digital and social world works. They have data, and within that data, they could get 157,000 leads, but then only about 500 people actually register with them. After meeting with Beth, I helped Liz on a project we have been working on, then we watched a webinar during lunch. After lunch, I met with Shawn and he gave me a tour of all of SAS’s video studios and how video marketing is huge. The picture above is pictures that I took of building V, down in the videography studios.
