Day 5 – The Orchestra Librarian

As a part of my integration into the symphony society, my supervisor had me meet with the orchestra librarian to get a better understanding of how everything works. At Meymandi Hall, in the depths of the basement, through seemingly a million doors and small corridors, Deb (the orchestra librarian) sits amongst thousands of scores that the symphony has collected over the years.

The Orchestra Librarian, I have learned, has one of the most important jobs of the NC Symphony. Deb not only delivers and sets up the musician’s music, but also deals with a plethora of copyrighting laws, the composers wants and 14 series of music to prepare for the upcoming season. She explained that the process of buying and/or renting pieces of music starts almost a year in advance to the time it is actually played. She deals with all of the companies selling the music and HAND WRITES all of the conductor’s and other musician’s markings into all of the other sets of music.

We talked about the history of written music and why some pieces can or cannot be purchased, as well as how the history of the U.S. has affected the music, the composers, and the direction of classical music itself. We talked about our mutual love of Duke Ellington and how she became the NC Symphony’s principal orchestra librarian. We talked about how she never thought she would be in the position she’s at today, that she always planned on playing percussion in an orchestra, but how ultimately she feels that everyone ends up where they are supposed to be in life. (<my favorite takeaway)

Day 5 at USA baseball!

Today was such a cool day. Jonathan and I made our way to the USA baseball offices around 9:30. This is different than the USA baseball complex, but they are currently working on moving the offices to be at the complex. We then met Brittany, who is the marketing assistant director for USA baseball. Brittany primarily works with the host family program that USA baseball offers, a program where a family has the chance to host a rising baseball star from all over the world for a week. She showed us around the office, showing us famous trophies from over the years and introducing us to people in the office such as the CEO and finance director and interns who are spending there summer working for USA baseball. Brittany then explained to us her background, how she was actually an intern that turned into the job that she has today. Brittany gave us many tasks throughout the day. Our first task was to make folders that would be given out to the national women’s team, as they have their identification process this coming weekend. This included papers where players filled out their names, travel forms, medical forms and sorted and copied all of these into 50 folders. We then stuck labels onto all of these as well. After this, we were given a box of lanyards and had to label them with the names of the host family. This program happens very soon so most of what was going on in the office had to do with this. After this, we put together another folder filled with information that needed to go to the host family. This included the schedule for the time and other general guidelines that the host family had to know. As we were working, it was very intersting  to hear the conversations that we’re going on in the office. There were conversations from the basketball game last night to how to best edit a picture for a pamphlet given out at a game. This was really cool to hear and I’m glad we were able to spend the day here.

Day 4 – DAY 4!

My Friday (and first Summerfest experience) with the Symphony was an all around chaotic experience. I started the day with my usual spreadsheet work and paper shredding until it was time to pack the cart (which is an extremely tedious process fyi) and head on over to Koka Booth.

After setting up our booth, my supervisor took me on a tour of the amphitheater. There is a whole downstairs with elevators and dressing rooms and tons and tons of sheet music! My duties included setting out booklets, taking pictures of the families that came, marking which tables were open, and picking “Picnic of the Week”. The annual Summerfest goers pack picnics with themes in hopes of winning a gift card from Lowes. After the many hours of running around, my feet hurt like crazy, but it was so worth getting to see the production that the marketing team had been talking about all week.  AND I did it all over again on Saturday 🙂

Walk West: Day 5

The lovely view of the front office.

This morning kicked off at around 8:30 AM. Instead of coming in at 10, I came early to attend the 9 AM Monday morning stand-up meeting. Today’s meeting was rather short, due to a fairly busy week for the rest of the office. Important items from last week were brought up and then the floor was open to everyone. Following this, I sat in on two other meetings. These were also team meetings, but broken up into small groups based on a certain area or project. Each person went around and discussed what they would be working on for the week to come. After both of these meetings, I started back up with some more research. Backlinks to a site are when another website (that is not the Walk West) links to the actual Walk West page. Having more backlinks to your website is definitely a positive and can give your company more credit. However, some websites will mention your company, but not include a link to your website. I was assigned the task of googling different terms where Walk West may be mentioned and checking if they linked to the Walk West page. Some of them did not and when this was the case, I contacted either whoever wrote the article or just the website in general. I asked them to include a link to the Walk West website. After a lunch break, I started on a task to prepare for an event launch for a client on Wednesday. I went through a list of people attending and tried to find their twitter handles — personal or for their organization. Later on in the day, I actually received an email back from one of the companies I had reached out to about links. They fixed the link and wanted to write an article about Walk West. I found it super exciting that if I had not been doing that research, they may not have reached out to write an article! I’d say it was a pretty successful day.

Day 4! Last day at Entigral!

Today was Jonathan and I’s last day at the company Entigral. Throughout our time here, we have done a lot of the same but it was very accomplishing to finally finish what we have worked so hard on. We successfully found the information for 4000 car dealerships all throughout North Carolina. If you ever need a car, used or new, Mercedes or Honda, I’m sure one of these can find you the perfect car! After hours and hours of work, we completed the 3 tasks that Mr. Self had asked us to complete. We made a starter powerpoint for Mr. Self to use to sell the product, we completed a list of the 50 state car dealership associations across the country and found information for all the car dealerships in North Carolina. Even though all of this work was very time consuming, I learned a lot about what Marketing is really about and Mr. Self assured us that all of this information would be very crucial for other steps of this company. Mr. Self then ended our time together with some advice about our future and we said our goodbyes.

Day Four (Final Day) Entigral

I don’t know what happened, but Brook and recorded the remaining data in record time. Coming into the day i seriously doubted that we would finish the data base, but we did. We searched through all 4,000 dealerships an filed away almost 700 dealerships of interest, as well as completing a four other minor project. We were able to complete all of this is just four long days. Finally finishing was a great feeling. I didn’t believe it was possible to feel such euphoria from excel.  While working with excel wasn’t my favorite thing I learned a lot. I learned a few things regarding excel, a lot of car dealerships, and the value of strong market research. At the end of the day Mark Self met with us to discuss our work over the past few days and gives us advice in choosing colleges and for future careers. I enjoyed my experience at entigral and look forward to working with my next company.

Day 4 – Print Shop and Goodbyes

Today I went off site with my tour guide and host Paul to HM Document Solutions, which is the only manufacturing company under the greater Highmark Health company. Unfortunately, I was unable to take any pictures inside or share detailed information because of a non disclosure agreement. The print shop handles about 700 jobs per day, differentiating in scale, from Highmark affiliated work to independent, external jobs. The huge warehouse was filled with very impressive high speed machinery; not like your average Kinkos! One of the most interesting things I saw were the rolls of paper to be cut down and printed upon for jobs- the rolls were about a half ton in weight each, cost $500, and were able to produce over 88,000 pieces of 8 x 11 inch paper when cut to size.

I then attended an intern meeting with Adam, which gave me some perspective into the early process of participating in an internship, which will serve me well as I plan do a full paid summer internship here at the home office next summer (which Liz and Tina have invited me to participate in). Most of the afternoon was spent wrapping up my week here in Pittsburg at the home office with some final meetings with Tina and Liz. I also did some rounds visiting everyone on the marketing team to say my final thank yous, and present some gifts of North Carolina specialties that I purchased. Tina, Liz, and the rest of the team were even thoughtful enough to give me a present. It’s bittersweet leaving the office that so quickly felt like home, but I’m excited to catch my flight tonight to begin the next phase of my journey in Cheyenne, Wyoming!

Walk West: Day 4

This morning started off a bit slow, nevertheless the energy picked up in the afternoon. Not too many people needed help on any tasks this morning, so I continued my research for Andrew on SEO. Eventually, I reviewed two previews of website pages for the NC State Jenkins MBA program and was able to give feedback on if I thought there were any changes that needed to be made. The Walk West office is located within the Ventures building on the NC State campus; therefore, they strive to collaborate with many different NC State programs, etc. Each month they send out a newsletter to their employees, as well as their clients. When they feature articles, launches, and events they write a short 2-3 sentence overview of what happened/what it is about and its significance. I was able to write these for an article written by an employee, as well as a book the company had been mentioned in. Definitely a little bit scary to think about having my writing in a newsletter — but I’m sure Mr. Follet taught me well enough this year! After a quick lunch break (I ate inside the office, but NC State has food trucks come weekly, so many people eat within the campus), I ended up searching up who represented specific addresses for the Senate and House of Reps. Later, I worked with an intern who is also an NC State student and plays volleyball! We researched political ad disclosure policies in other states, as new regulations are coming forth because of the Facebook scandal.

Day 3 at Entigral

So today is my second to last day here and i am continuing to work on a database for all of the car dealerships in North Carolina that primary sell new cars. I came into today having sorted through 1000 car dealerships and recorded the ones that sold new cars. At the end of the day today I just hit 2,000. With only one day left at Entigral I really am work against the clock as i try to get through these last 2000 dealerships. However brook finished her project on collecting information on the 50 dealership associations so i should have more help tomorrow. All and all i would say things are going pretty good. I definitely have a new appreciation for extensive market research.

Day 3 – Proficient in Excel

After my daily trip to the office shredder, I spent most of my day looking for prospects to send promotional ads to for upcoming events. I am not going to lie, it was very uneventful, but I learned the importance of prospects and networking within the marketing department.

Finding prospects, or potential new clients, is what keeps the marketing department very busy, but ensures that the box office is making sales. Affinity groups and organizations are searched in hopes of finding some similar interest with upcoming shows, they are then sent some sort of deal for purchasing tickets (for Summer Fest there are many deals going around) with the thought that these people will want to buy tickets in bulk for friends and family.

Tomorrow will be my first day at Summer Fest and I have been ensured that it will be very busy and will have me doing lots of errands, (and after seeing the list of things needing to be done, I believe it) but I am excited to finally get out from my cubical and help out on site.
