Sixth day

Today was an early day where the farrier came. The farrier is the person that comes and puts shoes on all the horses. The farrier comes every Tuesday but usually, each horse only gets new shoes on every 5 to 6 weeks. After that, we trained the young horse and then after that, I rode two different horses. After that, I pulled some horses manes and also got them tacked up and ready to be ridden for the trainer. The weather was a lot cooler today so it was a good day. Excited for tomorrow.

Fifth Day

Today was the first day of the second week and I had a really good time. We once again did the normal routine of riding and getting the horses ready that needed to be ridden and then also trained some different horses. Also today I met one of the barn cats and fed her and also played with her a little bit. Overall another fun day and can’t wait for tomorrow.

Third Day

Today I learned a lot about what it is like to teach people and what it is like to be an instructor. There were several people that came to have a lesson in the indoor riding ring and the trainer went on to instruct. I listened and observed what was happening and what kind of things were being said. I set jumps and also helped out when needed during the lessons. After that, I once again worked with the young horse and also rode a couple other horses at the barn. I realized how much work goes into one day and that it is a very tiring day. It also didn’t help that the heat index was close to 100. I met some other colleagues and other students that go to the barn and talked with them for a bit. It was another great day and I can’t wait for day four!

Second Day

Today was much like yesterday. I was still learning about the place and what it means to work in this type of environment. It overall was a really good day and I learned a lot. I tacked up many horses, I set up a new course in the indoor arena, and I cleaned and organized tack and other various things. It was a very hot day today so it was important to stay hydrated and cool. I also groomed horses and we planned for the rest of the week. In addition, someone came to get a lesson at 12 so I helped out with that. I also helped train the same young horses as yesterday and making good progress. Another good day and can’t wait for the rest!

First Day

Today was my first day working with Meagan Bennett. We started the day by briefly getting to know each other and talking about my goals from this experience. After, she walked me through what would happen in these coming weeks. I started out the day by planning and organizing the competition calendar for the summer which includes where and who will be competing at the various shows.  After this, I learned about the different horses and what was needed to keep a calm and professional environment at a job like this. I started getting some horses tacked up for the trainer and then took care of them after. I also worked with an up and coming young horse of age 3. I have already learned so much and can’t wait to see what else this experience will bring for me!
