Psychology Independent Study

6/3/22

Today was my last day of my psychology independent study. As a closure, I wanted to focus on clinical psychology. Clinical psychology is the study of individuals, by observation or experimentation, with the intention of promoting change. This field is directly one on one with a psychologist and a patient. Clinical psychologist meet with families, schools, hospitals and individuals to initiate change/strength in mental health.

Today was my third day of my independent study. My focus was human motivation, emotion, and personality. The videos I watched emphasized that our feelings and the behaviors they drive can also affect the minds, bodies, and health of those around us. While there are 10 basic human emotions, there are many other feelings which are combinations or mixtures of the ten. These polarities affect our psychological states, and consequentially our bodies. Additionally, I learned about personality disorders. Personality disorders are psychological disorders marked by inflexible, disruptive, and enduring behavior patterns that impair social and other functioning– whether the sufferer recognizes it or not.

Today was my second day of my psychology independent study. Specifically, I dove deeper into psychology cognitive psychology. First, I watched a video on the chemical mind and a video on getting to know the brain. One main thing that I learned is that everything psychological is biological. Neurons are information messengers that make up the nervous system.  They use electrical impulses and chemical signals to transmit information between difference areas of the brain the rest of the nervous system. As neurons meet with neurotransmitters emotions and actions are translated. Next, I read an article on cognitive psychology. Cognitive psychology focuses on the mental processes such as the human though process, the use of language, learning information and how humans perceive the environment.

Today was my first day of my psychology independent study. I focused on the basics and learning what psychology is. I watched/took notes on a video about the true definition of psychology. Psychology is the science of mental life emotions, feelings, behavior etc. The science of behavior and mental process. Later, I read/took notes on an article about the different types of psychology. and how the knowledge of psychology can translate into the real world. While most believe psychologist only work with patients and mental health, there is much more to it than that. Psychologists do not only work in medical settings, but also ergonomics. For example, schools structure/dynamics, workplace/companies, restaurants, hotels, etc.

They strive to enable employees to be able to effectively and productively contribute to the company. Additionally, Human Resources try and cater to the needs of the people in the work force. Each person is different and is in a different circumstance; so hospitality is very important regarding the work force. It was interesting to see this side of a company which is often overlooked.

Today was my second day at Summit Hospitality Group. I spent the day with Erica, a sales analyst, and experienced a day in her life. As a sales analyst, her job is to evaluate trends in sales and help increase sales and revenue for a company. Many things come to factor such as weather, time of year, demand etc. I got a chance to learn what goes behind the scenes of hotel sales and why prices are the amount they are.

Summit Hospitality

5/24/22

My first day at Summit Hospitality was insightful. Summit Hospitality is a North Carolina hotel and restaurant management company founded in 1989. They own eighteen properties across North Carolina in a variety of areas. Today I shadowed Yates Parrish, an analyst at Summit Hospitality. Additionally, I got the opportunity to listen in on two major meetings with Doyle Parrish, the CEO of the multimillion-dollar property management. These meetings occur every two weeks. They put forth effort to meet accordingly, to review and report how the hotels restaurants are doing. I got to compare and contrast how different types of businesses (hotels and restaurants) are managed and analyzed. Each person in the office added value and a different perspective to the company.  Often, people that stay in hotels or eat at restaurants don’t tend to think about how much goes behind the scenes of a buisness; however it is interesting to see how all of the different components come together.
