Medicaid Expansion

Over the past couple of days, Ms. Paliga has taught us the importance of Medicaid Expansion in North Carolina. Pat McCrory signed away the governor’s ability to expand Medicaid in 2013, so now the NC legislature has the control. However, there is reluctance in expanding. North Carolina Legislators don’t see the all-around win of expanding Medicaid. Not only does it increase coverage to more than 500,000 people in North Carolina. It funnels almost 1.2 billion dollars into the NC economy as it would decrease uncompensated care. From learning about Medicaid Expansion, we worked as a team to create several informative slides to post on Instagram about it.

Website Workshop and Webinar Discussion

Shortly after the informative webinar on domestic violence against women in the military, we met with Ms. Paliga to debrief the webinar. We talked about specific points in the webinar like how COVID-19 has caused a surge in domestic violence cases and talked about specific victim’s stories. This discussion prompted us to start and draft an article about the webinar to capture the importance of this issue. Afterward, we showed Ms. Paliga our updates on the website and talked about how we can further improve it. We added a couple of ads at the top of the website regarding Roe V.S. Wade and added some kinks to make the website more accessible.

Our Updates:

Domestic Violence Struggles in the Military

This morning, we started our day off listening to a moving webinar on the domestic violence struggles in the military. In the webinar, women shared their personal stories about how the male figures around them to advantage of them and abused them. We also got to listen to many different women in power in the NC police department and organizations fighting for change give several accounts of victims. The webinar allowed us to have contextualization of the statistics that we learned from the Equal Means Equal film. Also, they discussed the several flaws in North Carolina law, and how reformation is needed right now or domestic violence cases will continue to boom in this state. Later, we will meet with Ms. Paligia to discuss the webinar in further depth.
