Our first zoom of the day was with Dr. Hassell, who we had met the day before, who was a fantastic radiologist. We were able to see actual patient x rays! We saw x-rays from acls to the brain which was very exciting and interesting for all of us as most of us had never seen these types of x-rays. He also showed us the difference of what was normal on a lung x-ray and what was not normal by comparing two types of x-rays. We learned so much about radiology from Dr. Hassell and some of us even said we became very interested in the field after the meeting!
After Dr. Hassell, we met with Dr. Zipkin once again to discuss primary care medicine. Dr. Zipkin allowed us to reflect on what we had done so far in the program. She explained some helpful tips about med school and how to be professional in the field. She also went through her life as a primary care physician where she sometimes she dealt with very routine patients and sometimes she dealt with more life threatening patients. She also talked about the importance of the advancement in technology in the medical field, specifically the electronic charts that we now have. Finally, she answered our question regarding television doctor shows by speaking on the overall dramatization of the tv. She gave us a wonderful overview of the medical field and a great description of her job that we could all be very interested in!
Next we met with Dr. Wu, a pediatrician, where she gave us a wonderful presentation regarding the job of a pediatrician and what they have to deal with and look for in kids. She explained that there are countless specialties in pediatrics and there is general pediatrics. She discussed the importance of immunizations in children and went over the steps for healthy living for children. We were able to ask pressing questions at the end of her informative presentation and came out of the meeting with a great understanding of the job of a pediatrician. I know a lot of us were interested in the field of pediatrics, and Dr. Wu did an amazing job encompassing her occupation as a pediatrician.
Lastly, we met once again with Dr. Tehrani about being a hospitalist. He told us two very important stories that impacted his career. The first story was about a patient who ended up passing away, but he helped us figure out why he passed away and talked about the lows of being a hospitalist as losing a patient is very difficult on the doctor. However, he told us a story about a man who they had to place in a medically induced coma after coming in for influenza, and he ended up having to lose his legs and hands. The patient turned a very difficult situation into a positive one and started raising awareness. Dr. Tehrani called this one of the highs of his career because they were able to save the man and even though he had to get his legs and hands amputated, he was able to get through it with positivity and love for his doctors. Finally, Dr. Tehrani went over his job in administration of a hospital, which we found especially interesting as we had not heard of that type of job previously in our other meetings. Dr. Tehrani did an amazing and engaging job presenting to us in the past two days regarding being a hospitalist and hospital medicine.
