Today was the final day of observation. I was observing today a orthopedic surgeon who specialize in sports medicine. So I was able to see a lot of sports injuries that were caused by things that I am very familiar with.

The first surgery was a shoulder replacement where he use 3-D printed pieces to insert a new shoulder and have the patient getting back mobility in the shoulder which is very interesting to see. The second surgery was a ACL repair where I was able to see how an ACL is first damaged and then how the doctor is able to hear heal it. This is very cool to see because I have seen how they fix it and how it’s gonna happen. And then lastly there was another shoulder replacement from a fracture.

Overall this has been a very good experience for me to see both the good and bad size of medicine. I have seen the good rewarding aspects that comes from saving someone’s life, but also the native aspects of time commitment and hardship on the surgeon.

Today I was in the office with an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in knee and shoulder issues. I saw several different sports related injuries which was very cool to see.

the office was very busy but using teamwork with the other staff I saw how the office was able to stay on track and keep the patients happy.

the orthopedic surgeon helped explain to me the value of making connections in the medical field as it allows for you to get more patients. This showed me the power of collaboration and teamwork which was very cool to see.

WakeMed

Today was another day in the OR where I was able to witness another robotic surgery.

this surgery consisted of removing the kidney because of a tumor. This surgery was very intense but the team was able to collaborate and work through it.

Today was another successful day and I am excited for tomorrow.

WakeMed

Today was the third day of my shadowing and this day was another one in the OR.

I arrived early in the morning to attend the first surgery of the day which was a Pectus Excavatum which is a surgery that fixes a caved chest with metal bar in the chest.

After the first surgery I followed behind a resident seeing several patients that included babies and young adults. The resident helped explain to me alot of what medical school envolées and the stress you are put under.

I ended the day with seeing another one of the Pectys surgery’s and watched the teamwork it takes.

WakeMed

Today was the second day of my shadowing and I had the great opportunity of being able to attend the OR today and see several different surgeries.

Early in the morning I met with a Thoracic surgeon who described to me the connection between sports and surgery by detailing how it is a combination of both independence and perseverance along with teamwork. I was able to see him preform an open heart surgorry in a patient who needed a mitral valve repair. This was very interesting to see as it shown end me not only the pressure and stress the surgeon undergoes but also the amount of teamwork it takes to complete such a high stakes surgery.

In the afternoon I met with a urologist who was removing a prostate from the patient using a surgical robot. This was very cool to see how they used tech and medicine together to have the best results.

WakeMed Clinic

Today was the first day at the wake med clinic where I shadowed a urgologist throughout the whole day and watched him visit patients.

I met several patients, and even met one who drove all the way from Maryland just for his appointment!

I saw several different procedures including a prostate biopsy, vasectomy, and several others. The patients were all very nice and welcomed me very well.

All the doctors helped explain everything thoroughly and it gave me a very good experience of what it’s like to be a doctor. Overall it was a great day and I am very excited for tomorrow.
