Day 3: Another Day filled with Zoom

Today was another day filled with zoom calls. We started out our day with Dr. Hassell. While I was unfortunately forced to miss it because of a doctor’s appointment, I hear that it was incredibly interesting. We looked at different x-rays especially of the lungs, and he taught us how to examine them. It sounded like a super fun experience for the group!

Then we met with Dr. Zipkin again where we discussed and reflected on some critic we had about the medical rotation program. Then she answered some insightful questions like what the most meaningful thing she learned from her medical rotations was. It was a helpful debrief for us after having to sit through so many zoom calls.

Next, we met with Dr. Wu, a pediatric physician who gave us a really cool presentation on what goes into pediatrics. One of the major things that she emphasized was preventive care. Things like immunization and a healthy lifestyle are all things that are important to keep a child happy and healthy. She also showed us a chart detailing the immunization schedule for vaccinations in babies which was super interesting and something that we all went through when we were babies.

Finally, we met with Dr. Tehrani for a second time. In this session, he told us two major stories that he would never forget. One was of the lowest point in his career where he emphasized how important it is to be alert at all times and how the simplest mistake can cause detrimental consequences. The other story was a highlight of his career where the man he treated was a extremely positive person, even through all of his difficulties. This patient impacted him greatly and there was even quite a few news articles written about him. Both of these stories were super impactful for him and to us and demonstrated some major aspects of being a doctor.

Day 2: A Busy Day of Zoom Calls

Today we had a day full of question and answer sessions with 5 different medical professionals! We started out with Dr. Tehrani who focused on being a hospitalist. One of the interesting things we learned about being a hospitalist is the work schedule. They only work for half a month however that half of the month is 12 hours per day, 7 days a week with a total of 84 hours per week. Definitely a tiring and hectic schedule but according to Dr. Tehrani, completely worth it. Next we met with Dr. Hassell, a radiologist. We learned all about X-rays and Cat Scans and other cool technology related to radiology. It was really fun learning about the ins and outs of how modern technology impacts this field of medicine. Then, we had a call with Dr. Adkins where we talked about endocrinology, diabetes and insulin, hormones such as growth factors, and the ethical debate behind trans people. After Dr. Adkins, we jumped on a zoom call with Dr. White, a thoracic surgeon. He described some really interesting surgeries that he had performed yesterday and showed us pictures of chest x-rays. We also learned some interesting but also slightly terrifying statistics about lung cancer in the United States.  Finally, our day ended with Dr. Wu who taught us the basics of cardiology and the heart and the difference between heart attacks and cardiac arrest. We also got to see more x-ray scans of the heart from some operations he did. Today was a surprisingly connected day as the information from Dr. Hassell about X-rays was then touched on with Dr. White. Information about the heart and open heart surgery that was discussed with Dr. White was then also touched on with Dr. Wu.
