Day 8 – Human Resources and Gather IQ

6/6/19

Today was my last day working at SAS. I started the day by shadowing my host as she did background checks and other things she needed to do as a University Recruiting Coordinator. After shadowing her, I left to meet with someone who worked in the HR Communications department. She talked to me about social media and how they are the link between marketing and HR. After that meeting, I went to lunch with the rest of the Cary Academy students. After lunch, we finished up our projects for Gather IQ and presented them to the team at SAS. I had a great experience at SAS and really learned a lot!

Day 7 – Human Resources and Interviews

6/5/19

Today I was working in Human Resources. My host was very busy today with an interview day, so I spent the majority of my time meeting with other people who worked in the Human Resources department at SAS. I first sat in on a meeting about diversity and how they were trying to spread it throughout the company. I learned there that SAS had just won an award for diversity at the NACE conference. After the meeting I sat in on, I met with 2 different recruiters who talked to me about their jobs. They also talked to me about their paths in SAS and how they have been able to switch jobs and move around whenever needed. For lunch, I had Panera with my host. We were sitting in on an interview day presentation, so I got to learn a lot more about how SAS interviews candidates. After lunch, I met with a HR Business Partner who talked to me about how she is the liaison between different areas of the company and makes sure everything gets done. Lastly I talked to a program manager, which was a cool experience because she showed me how diverse her job could really be. I am excited to go back tomorrow for my last day!

Day 6 – Human Resources

6/4/19

Today I spent the day in Human Resources. I started off by getting to know my host and how she came to SAS. We talked for about an hour about her experiences with SAS and what I would be doing this week. After talking, we went back to her office and started working on different things that she does as a University Recruiting Coordinator. We looked at new potential candidates and talked about the recruiting and hiring process overall. After meeting with her, I spent time with an intern in Talent Acquisition. We talked about his role and what he does for the company. He showed me a bunch of the different programs that he uses to look at people and sort the people they are hiring. He also showed me a bunch of different projects that he is working on. After doing that, we went to lunch in building C and talked about different things we are each interested in. I saw several people I knew from Cary Academy and other places at lunch as well. After lunch, we went to the top floor of building A where you can see the Durham skyline, the Raleigh skyline, and the RDU airport control tower. We then went downstairs and talked to some more people in TA who showed us more projects and how they approach University Recruiting. I then went back with my host and helped her complete some more of the tasks on her to-do list and prepare for all of her interviews tomorrow. I enjoyed working in HR today and am excited to come back tomorrow.

Day 5 – Team Projects

6/3/19

Today we met in building C to continue our projects. When we arrived, we were shocked when the people who assigned our project decided to change it up. We got rid of the last project that we had worked on Friday, and started on a new challenge of creating a viral challenge video. We worked on this all morning and scrapped several ideas before settling on our best one. We then had pizza for lunch in one of the conference rooms. After lunch, we finished up our scripts for the video, and started filming some of the clips that we will need for the final video. We also researched background shots and found other information for our video. That was all for today, and I am excited to work in Human Resources tomorrow.

Day 4 – Team Business

5/31/19

Today we all met up as a group in building R and started doing some research for SAS’s Gather IQ team. We first learned a little bit about the app and what it was, and then we completed a survey. We looked at different parts of the website and gave lots of feedback in regards to what was good and what could be fixed. After that we had lunch in building R, and started on our project. We were tasked with creating a video that reflects one of the Global Goals that was featured on the website. We started brainstorming a video and a marketing plan that would best fit the project. That was all for today, and I am excited to keep working on Monday.

Day 3 – Marketing and Video

5/30/19

Today was my last day working with the marketing teams at SAS. We started the day by meeting with people who designed and worked on SAS’s main event, Global Forum. We met with the people who designed different booths throughout the event as well as the people who designed the signs and all of the visuals all around the event. They talked to us about continuity and the amount of work that is put in before the event and before you even start designs for the event. After these meetings, we sat in on a creative meeting where the team laid out some of the things they were and have been working on to show us some of what they do. We saw posters, t-shirts, infographies, and short info cards that were all designed by the team. After this meeting we went to lunch in building R and talked with some interns about what they do at SAS. After lunch, we toured building V which is the video productions building. It has lots of cool resources inside that create fun videos for the company. We also visited the print shop where they print all of the booths and anything needed from the marketing company, and the scenics shop that builds anything people need. Today was a good day in the office, and I am excited to work on apps with other people tomorrow.

Day 2 – Marking and Tours

5/29/19

Today we met in building U before going upstairs to meet with other members of the team. We first met with a writer who showed us a lot of the projects he works on every day. After showing us what he did, he then completed one of his tasks for the day with us. Once he was done with that, we were then taken over to a copyeditors office. The copyeditor that we met with explained to us how a lot of people came from journalism backgrounds of newspaper companies before coming to work in marketing at SAS. He also explained to us things about his job and he talked about the different projects that he edits. After he explained all of that, we were taken downstairs to meet with another writer who specialized in booths and testing out the software. She explained to us how she tests out one of the programs that SAS is developing so that she can catch any glitches before the program is publicized. She also showed us the advertising side of marketing and gave examples of ways visuals were used throughout the field. After meeting with her, the whole marketing team we were working with took us to lunch, where we had lots of conversations about SAS life in general. After lunch, we went on a tour of the recreational parts of campus so that we could see the benefits that SAS offers to its employees. The last thing that we did was meet with a graphic designer in building R. She showed us some of the ways that she designs programs and we toured the area as well. Overall it was a great day and I am excited to go back tomorrow for my last day in marketing.

Day 1- Introduction and Marketing

5/28/19

Today was the first day with my work experience program and myself, as well as the other students working at SAS, started our day off by meeting with two Human Resources representatives who had coordinated our work experience at SAS.  After meeting them downstairs in the lobby, we went upstairs in building A to a conference room to listen to a general introduction about SAS and what it does throughout the world. We learned a lot in the presentation about the Data for Good programs which use SAS analytics and software to solve modern day problems in the real world. We also learned about how SAS was founded, some perks of being an employee there, and about the tradition of M&Ms being served every Wednesday. After our introduction meeting, we went and had lunch in the building A cafeteria, The Terrace. There was a wide selection of food ranging from sushi to pasta to salads, however, most of us decided to still get pizza. I am sure we will all venture out and try other foods as the two weeks pass. As we ate lunch, we met with some of the HR interns and other employees working there who talked to us about life at SAS and their journeys that led them to SAS. We learned about how the majority of interns and workers actually come from North Carolina State University because the company is widely publicized at the university. After lunch, we watched a few more videos about SAS and then split up to meet with the people that we were shadowing. I shadowed someone who works in Marketing and Communications in building U. She started off our meeting by introducing herself and a little bit of what she does at SAS before bringing us around the floor to meet a lot of the people that she worked with. We met lots of designers, copy editors, writers, and more who all worked in that particular marketing branch of the company. After the introductions, we looked at some information packets that had been recently produced as well as started to look at a packet that they were in the process of producing. We were able to offer up suggestions as to how to make the packets better and give information about what would resonate the most with specific audiences. After this, we were able to ask lots of questions about marketing in general and specific ones about what they do in the company. Overall it was a great day, and I am excited tomorrow to meet more people that are involved in the marketing process .
