Today we had a day full of question and answer sessions with 5 different medical professionals! We started out with Dr. Tehrani who focused on being a hospitalist. One of the interesting things we learned about being a hospitalist is the work schedule. They only work for half a month however that half of the month is 12 hours per day, 7 days a week with a total of 84 hours per week. Definitely a tiring and hectic schedule but according to Dr. Tehrani, completely worth it. Next we met with Dr. Hassell, a radiologist. We learned all about X-rays and Cat Scans and other cool technology related to radiology. It was really fun learning about the ins and outs of how modern technology impacts this field of medicine. Then, we had a call with Dr. Adkins where we talked about endocrinology, diabetes and insulin, hormones such as growth factors, and the ethical debate behind trans people. After Dr. Adkins, we jumped on a zoom call with Dr. White, a thoracic surgeon. He described some really interesting surgeries that he had performed yesterday and showed us pictures of chest x-rays. We also learned some interesting but also slightly terrifying statistics about lung cancer in the United States. Finally, our day ended with Dr. Wu who taught us the basics of cardiology and the heart and the difference between heart attacks and cardiac arrest. We also got to see more x-ray scans of the heart from some operations he did. Today was a surprisingly connected day as the information from Dr. Hassell about X-rays was then touched on with Dr. White. Information about the heart and open heart surgery that was discussed with Dr. White was then also touched on with Dr. Wu.
