“Oh my god, new high score!” are the words you might’ve heard echoing through the halls at Cary Academy lately. A new single-player game has hit the App Store and it’s all the rage. Block Blast, a Tetris-like puzzle game, has become a major hit among teens in America.
Seen on Tik-Tok, Instagram, and other popular social media websites, Block Blast has become well-known. The game features an 8×8 grid where different shapes of blocks appear that you have to puzzle together. The goal is to put the blocks together in a horizontal row or vertical column, causing them to break and add to your score. It’s game over when you can no longer fit any of the randomized blocks into your grid. At that point, your final score is generated and you can only hope it will be higher than your last.
The game has, “become addicting” says, Mira Greenwolfe. “I always feel unsatisfied with my score, so I have to do better on the next round and it continues in a cycle.”
Despite Block Blast’s ability to increase screen time and waste precious free periods, there is slight controversy over the new updates. Riley Moore, Block Blast expert says, she “hate[s] when it starts [her] off with blocks.” Riley also dislikes the new, “look of the play and adventure button.” However, some argue that the new update makes it easier to reach high scores. Noelle Moorehead agrees saying her, “high score has gone up 10,000 points since the new update.” She said she loves it and even got some teachers addicted.
Now, the question presents itself, will the Block Blast buzz continue, getting more players? Or will a new mobile game replace it and start a new addictive buzz.
