Though the final full week of school before holiday break was shortened due to exciting yet unexpected snow, the Cary Academy Student Council was still hard at work making sure the Upper School students could show their spirit. StuCo took a vote to determine this year’s spirit week themes, adding new twists to old traditions. As sophomore class president Samantha Hoffman explained, “the most unique day of the week was probably It’s Wednesday my Dudes day, which was a new addition due to many requests for it.” In past years, Wednesday and Thursday have been “Way Back Wednesday” and “Wacky Tacky Thursday,” but StuCo decided this year to accommodate student opinions and create a meme-themed day on Wednesday.
“Wacky Tacky Thursday” has always been followed by the classic Spirit Week tradition, the Wacky Olympics, a competition in which student representatives from each grade compete in funny and awkward tasks for first place, which also translates to Spirit Cup points. This year, StuCo created a few new events; most notably adding the game “Hungry Hippos,” in which two students from each grade work together with a scooter and a bucket to try and take as many balls from the middle of the gym as possible. Despite the changes it encountered this year, Hoffman says that “Spirit Week turned out as a great success and couldn’t have been done without the Student Council volunteers and Hern Lim, Student Council president.”
It seems the Upper School was feeling more festive than usual this holiday season, as the sophomore class particularly also partook in a fun experience. During the three-day week just before the holiday break, the sophomores gathered in the dining hall to compete in a gingerbread decorating competition. “Advisories packed in the dining hall to see who had the best gingerbread decorating skills,” said Hoffman. The advisories got into full competition mode; Hoffman explained, “Ms. Barlaz’s advisory won with an elaborate Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs design. It was overall a lot of fun and a nice end to school before the holiday break.”
We hope everyone enjoyed their holiday break! We’re looking forward to a great new year to come.
