Cary Academy’s winter athletes have been working hard this season, and all their dedication has been paying off, making the season a successful one on all fronts.
CA’s wrestling team remains as strong as ever this season. Home to past individual wrestling state champions, the wrestling program undoubtedly has the secret to success. “The camaraderie on the team is extraordinary; I definitely feel like part of a family rather than a team,” said Grant Scotto, a junior on the team. “The season has been good, I feel like we are very close as a team but graduating three state champs last year leaves us with a small and very young team. I think we have strong potential and can do very well this season. From the younger side I see a lot of potential that can be grown into some great wrestlers,” Scotto continued. With only three seniors and four juniors on the primarily middle-school dominated wrestling team, there’s one thing we know for sure: the future of the CA wrestling program is bright.
The dominance of the CA boys and girls swimming programs has continued this season, with a 4-1 record on the boys side, and a 5-0 record for the girls.
Since its start, the Varsity Boys Swim Team has been among the most dominant programs in CA sports history. The team has earned nine TISAC conference titles in a row— a record longer than any other CA sports team. This season is no different; the Varsity Boys Swim Team has continued to prove its competitiveness among top NCISAA opponents. Among commanding wins against Greensboro Day, St. David’s school, NCSSM, and the Christian Community School, the only loss on the boys team’s resume was a close call against Trinity School. On their way to the 5-0 record they hold today, CA’s defending state championship team, Girls Varsity Swim, has continued to dominate the NCISAA. The Lady Chargers have knocked out opponents by huge margins this season including an 83-11 victory over Greensboro Day and a 78-14 victory over Trinity School.
The record-setting CA swim teams will have just three more meets in the new year before heading to TAC to defend their TISAC titles on January 31st. The boys team will have the chance to bring their tenth TISAC title back to CA, and the girls will have a chance to win their fifth straight title. The teams will then head to Greensboro Aquatic Center on February 11th, where the girl’s team will have a chance to defend their third straight NCISAA title. Best of luck to the swim teams with the rest of their season!
CA’s varsity basketball teams have continued to work hard this season. On the girls side, a 3-6 record has come with some close calls. But as strong as ever, and refusing to let the large crowd intimidate them, the young team soared to an impressive 40-38 victory over Trinity Academy on Homecoming night. The boys’ basketball team’s record this season doesn’t account for the hard work they have put in. Another young CA team, three freshmen boys made the team that boasts only one senior this year. Nevertheless, the boys have fought hard; after losing two close calls against the Raleigh Hawks and New Life Storm teams, the boys gained their first victory at home against Raleigh Charter. With 12+ games left in the regular season alone, the girls and boys basketball teams will have plenty more opportunities to let their hard work show on the court. Good luck with the rest of the season!
