Winter Sports Update by Princess Bernard Oti, ’18
As we transition from the winter sports season to spring sports, it is always a good idea to reflect on and evaluate the amazing accomplishments each team has achieved.
Starting with Varsity Girls Basketball, this team’s winning and losing record does not reflect how hard and with how much effort each member played this season. This season marked Sequenta Blackman and Dick Wagner’s second year coaching Varsity Girls Basketball. Due to a variety of different injuries that took out almost half of the team’s roster, the remaining players had to adjust greatly and learned how to play with limited bodies. Although the girls did not end the season with a stellar record, the team proved that there is potential in the Girls’ Varsity program for the future.
Varsity Boys Basketball, too, adjusted to playing under a new coaching staff. Coach Perkins has done an amazing job as head coach, showing that CA basketball means business. The boys ended their season with an overall record of 14-8 and a conference record of 3-5, putting them in third place in their conference. One boys’ basketball player who deserves a shout out is senior Trey Murphy. Trey has broken multiple school records during his CA career, including Cary Academy’s single season three-point record, he holds the title for all time 3-pointers at CA, and he successfully passed the 1000 points mark. When asked how he thought the season went, he responded, “This was the first time in my career that we had a huge winning season. Since we had lost 4 major seniors who had played significant minutes, we were doubted. But due to a good relationship between players and our ability to execute great team defense, we were able to come out successful this season.” Trey has been invited to represent Cary Academy in the NC Private School All-Star Game, and we are looking forward to supporting him in all his future basketball endeavors.
Next, CA’s Swim Team has had a phenomenal season. The team won conferences and states for the second year in a row, and the girl’s team went undefeated and broke 6 of 11 CA records. Isabella Barnette broke the 100-freestyle record, Charlotte Hook broke the 100-butterfly record, and Nisma Said broke the 100-backstroke record; Emma Zayas, Elena Zayas, Isabella Barnette, and Charlotte Hook broke 200 freestyle record, and Isabella Barnette, Helen Chen, Nisma Said, and Emma Zayas broke the 400 freestyle record.
Finally, the wrestling team has done a great job this season. They were able to bring 4 state championship wins back to CA, including those of Chapman Fitzgerald, Christian Sodano, Julian Sodano and Joe McDarris. Overall, Cary Academy winter sports accomplished many accolades this season and have made a name for themselves in the community.
