The Health Occupations Students of America, known as HOSA to many at Cary Academy, is a health education based club that introduces students to different health professions. HOSA is an organization that is nationally known and recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Health Science Education. This club provides the opportunity for students interested in health sciences to explore and learn more about careers in that field. This club provides a platform for those interested in leadership development. Members who demonstrate motivation and determination are given the chance to be recognized at a variety of levels through optional competitions. Last year’s members were the first batch of Cary Academy students to compete in a HOSA competition. Students competed in a health event of their choice and were given a glimpse of what it was like to work first-hand in the medical field. Some examples of events that CA members competed in are Sports Medicine, CPR/ First Aid, Medical Math, HOSA Bowl, etc. This competition was a great experience because, as novices, we were given a new perspective on how HOSA could be run and how we could improve the HOSA program at CA. It is an honor to be involved in such a nationally known student organization because of the importance this club has on its members. This experience builds character by providing participants the possibility to help others and make a difference by serving our community. Although HOSA has not yet conducted any fundraisers this year, planning for events such as these are in the works and should be expected. HOSA is a great club to be a part of because it encourages students to not just sit around and wait, but instead to take action and support projects they want implemented. This emphasis on teamwork and expanding opportunities for the future has been very beneficial to CA students.
