The African American Affinity group is a wonderful club that allows African Americans as well as allies to learn, share, and discuss issues concerning the black community. This club provides a safe space for members to express their views on serious issues that may be uncomfortable to share in other settings. Not only does AAAG provide a safe space for discussion, but it also allows for members to bond over issues that we all have in common. This year as well as past years, AAAG has planned multiple club activities that have created a closeness between members. Some of the activities we plan on doing this year are a trip to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Triangle Diversity Conference, a group dinner/movie, and some fundraisers. Because the African American History and Culture museum has recently opened in DC, AAAG will be planning to travel there and view pieces of history that have shaped our community into becoming what it is today. Also, the Triangle Diversity Conference, held at the beginning of each school year, is an activity many members of our club attend. TDA is a wonderful way to discuss issues facing our communities with people from other schools, and it allows our club to grow and become even better. Last school year, due to the tragedy that occurred in Flint, Michigan, our club took it upon ourselves to conduct a bake sale in order to raise money for the citizens of Flint. This fundraiser went very well, and we were glad that AAAG was able to contribute to their community. Conducting fundraisers for issues concerning the African American community is something we will continue to do this year. Lastly, our club enjoys bonding and getting to know each other, so we like to conduct group outings such as a movie and dinner night. We use the time as a way to talk about more positive things going on in our lives. All In all, African American Affinity group is a great way to learn about different issues and share your thoughts.
