Third Trimester Seniors: Capstones, College, and Counting Down to Commencement

By Sneha Advani

If you’ve walked through the senior hall or senior corner anytime recently, you know that the environment is a little different than it is in the rest of the school. Seniors are all relaxing and talking to their friends, getting ready to leave campus and take advantage of their senior privileges, or, occasionally, working on their homework. By now, we seniors are almost finished with our capstone projects in our English classes, the final major projects of our high school careers, and we are getting ready to share them with our classmates. But behind the calm aura of senioritis, there is a buzz of nervousness and excitement as we wait for the last few college decisions to roll in and we mull over the huge choices we are about to make. Almost all of the seniors have already received at least one college acceptance, and the collection of college pennants on our senior bulletin board keeps growing and expanding every day.

As we begin the countdown to graduation, we realize that we are not only getting one day closer to leaving Cary Academy, but also one day closer to starting anew in the college of our choosing. Life is about to change dramatically for us, especially for those of us who have stayed at Cary Academy for almost half of our lives, and we can’t help but wonder what our lives will be like in just a few short months. Where will we live? Who will we be friends with? What clubs will we join, and what classes will we take?

But amidst the frightening uncertainty that lies so closely ahead of us, there is also an unspoken knowledge that in the end, everything will be okay. In a year or two, just like the countless generations of seniors before us, we will have settled down, grown accustomed to college life, and maybe even forgotten about the stressful, bittersweet transition period between high school and college. Everything will be different, but maybe that’s not such a bad thing.
