The PTAA has given away $18,350 in Grant Money in 2015-16
Each year the PTAA accepts applications for grants that are intended to enrich the Cary Academy experience. This year the grants have touched upon a diverse and eclectic range of topics that include the arts, innovation, athletics, robotics, leadership training, and social education.
There are two types of grants that the PTAA has established:
PTAA Student Activity Enhancement Grants support activities that enrich and enhance the diverse areas of CA student interest within and beyond current academic curriculum.
The following are the Student Activity Grant recipients for 2015-2016 (to date):
- Tower Garden Grant – Heidi Maloy & Sam Monsour ($1100)
This grant purchased a second tower garden. The two tower gardens are currently being used and housed in the dining hall. Forty four students in advanced environmental science and thirty-eight students in CA Green are actively using these towers for multiple projects. - Young Adult Literature Ambassadors Program – Katie Taylor ($1300)
The goals of this program are to encourage students to read more often, to discuss their reading in meaningful ways with other students, and to foster lasting connections between upper and middle school students. Funding from this PTAA grant paid for two upper school students to attend YALL Fest in Charleston during the first trimester break to learn more about young adult literature and to meet young adult authors. The student leaders then plan to present to middle school students and to lead book club meetings during the second and third trimesters. This program will have a direct impact on every student in the middle school through Language Arts classes as well as provide an opportunity for leadership with our upper school students. - Robotics Practice Field – Betsy MacDonald ($1130)
This grant is on behalf of Team Q or FTC Robotics to provide a FIRST Tech Challenge official game field for practice and scrimmage use. Cary Academy’s Robotics team will gain advantage of practicing on an official game files and will benefit with outreach credit by inviting area teams to practice on our field. Additionally, it will allow scrimmages for FTC teams and perhaps the opportunity to become a host site for an official tournament. - Leni Newell Silk Banner Workshop – Lisa Todd & Julie Morris ($1500)
Leni Newell will work with Cary Academy to determine a design for the banners to be created that will incorporate CA’s mission and philosophy. The banners will be created using vibrant fabric dyes and silk painting techniques. In Leni’s description of the workshop, she states, “The residency is a great way to encourage a community spirit at your school as the artist encourages all school staff and parents to participate!”. Leni will work to get the entire school community involved and most of the banners will be used as a permanent installation to remain at CA. - Carolina Ballet Student Matinee of Macbeth – Julie Todd & Julie Morris ($1120)
Cary Academy’s tenth grade students will attend the Carolina Ballet Student Matinee of Macbeth. This performance will connect the students’ study of the play. - One Love Foundation – Heather Clarkson ($1500)
The One Love Foundation will be presenting their program on recognizing and taking action against relationship violence, especially in colleges. - FinishLynx Fully Automated Timing Digital Photo-Finish System – Kevin Jones, Conrad Hall ($1400)
