Pass-Offs evaluate the effectiveness of student preparation both inside and outside of class.
Pass-off material may consist of short excerpts from the music and exercises played in class or individualized material for the student. Materials to prepare for pass-offs will be listed on the trimester syllabus (found on the specific band class page) and updated on the weekly “What are we doing this week” page (link on CA Band Homepage).
Students who are not satisfied with their mastery of the band musical standards on a pass-off may choose to play again for Mr. Grush outside of class or submit a recording.
This system is designed to:
- Give students the opportunity to learn from and correct mistakes
- Give students the opportunity to raise their grades
- Reward students who work hard to improve their playing
How it works:
When a student plays a pass-off assignment, s/he will receive the grade earned based on the Band Musical Standards.
Students will receive a grade on each of the 5 standards so that they can see what skills need to be improved.
An “M” on an assignment means the assignment has not been completed or has not been received. Once the assignment is completed, the “M” will be replaced with the grade earned.
Students have one week after the due date of an assignment to complete it or to play it over for Mr. Grush to raise their grades.
