The effort mark is a holistic indicator of the degree to which a student demonstrates behaviors outlined in our Portrait of a Graduate. These behaviors are:
- eager to learn
- uses time wisely
- keeps trying even when faced with challenges or obstacles
- uses technology/equipment productively and responsibly
- works well with peers
- interacts respectfully with all
- takes care of personal property and respects property of others
- comes to class prepared to learn
The effort marks are:

4 | Consistently- with rare exception, the student demonstrates these behaviors |
3 | Frequently- more often than not, the student demonstrates these behaviors |
2 | Inconsistently-occasionally/sporadically, the student demonstrates these behaviors |
1 | Rarely- an exception when the student demonstrates these behaviors |

The student is consistently focused on class activities; takes initiative to pursue excellence in chosen discipline; and, demonstrates ability to work beyond expectations and excels at working independently.

The student is often focused on class activities; sometimes needs reminders to stay on task; and, consistently meets expectations.

The student is rarely focused; distracts other students; and, shows difficulty in meeting minimal expectations.

The student demonstrates inappropriate behavior; is unable to work with others; refuses to meet minimal expectations; and, shows a total lack of effort.
