Jazz Listening 10-26-11

There are 2 things you need to complete this period.  More details below.

  1. Complete the Student Survey
  2. Post your Listening Assignment review on your PERSONAL BLOG.

Student Survey

While the questions with check boxes are important, the short answer questions are most helpful to me.  But they are not required.  In question #25,  What else would you like for your teacher to know, please include the name of our class – Jazz Band.  Since I have 3 classes during C lock, I would like to be able to know which responses go with which class.  I would also like you to complete a separate survey for each specific band class you take.

Listening Assignment

Post your Listening Assignment review on your PERSONAL BLOG.  Listen to TWO of our Jazz on the Quad recordings and one earlier rehearsal recording of each piece and post comments on your blog.  For those of you keeping score, that means listen to 4 total recordings.  Then write no more than 3-4 sentences total about how we have improved so far and what else is left to improve.

Also, please write a one sentence answer to this question:

If we were to play one of these pieces at the Band Festival in March, which one should we choose and why?

  1. What we did well: Tenor Madness is incredibly tight. It’s jivin’, it’s swingin’, it’s rat-a-tat-tattin’. It’s got a lot of energy, and we never lose it. Thomas’s bass solo has a lot of great licks. What we could improve on? Coming out from the drum solo. And possibly the ending could have been more theatrical. And I had my piano amp turned way too far down.
Cold Duck Time: Thomas’s bass groove is great throughout the song, and with a little more work on my comping, the song could’ve been even more driving.
Bag’s Groove: The contrast is great with Tenor Madness and Cold Duck Time. Even though, with the vibes, it reminds me a little too much of the Wii Sports Resort soundtrack. The drum’s segway from the solos to the head was really nice.

Overall, a great performance. Over the year, I hope we can make each song even more exciting, making the more dynamic and learning how to intersperse the song with riffs that keep the song moving and enthrall the listener.
