This budget showed me and taught me a few things. The first thing I learned is that you should spend your money on the basics and needed things before moving to the optional things. For example, you should buy your house before you buy a dog. When you do this, you can see how much money you have to spend on allowances and optional things. Another thing I learned is that when you have roommates, you have more money left over after the basics. This also means that the more roommates you have, the more money you will save. I have two roommates so we can split our rent, internet, utilities, and escrow into three. The last thing I learned is that you should put more money in the categories than you think. You might think that you will only buy $50 worth of clothes, but it is very easy to break that. As soon as you spend more than $50, you are going into your savings money or retirement money. You definitely don’t want to do that! That’s why it’s important to put a little more money than you think you will need in each category.
