Floralis Genérica is a sculpture, or mechanism, made out of aluminum and steel. It is located in La Plaza de las Naciones Unidas in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Floralis Genérica is in the center of the park and is surrounded by a reflective pool. The flower was built by Argentinian architect Eduardo Catalano in 2002. Floralis Genérica is a very popular sculpture and attraction because it moves. It was designed to close it’s petals in the evening and open them in the morning. Eduardo Catalano said that the flower “is a synthesis of all the flowers and at the same time, a hope reborn every day at opening.” The sculpture, or mechanism, also closes it’s petals when there are strong winds and shines colorful lights at night. Additionally, the flower is open on four special nights: May 25, September 21, December 24, and December 31. Floralis Genérica has six petals, weighs 18 tons, and is 23 meters high. Some Cary Academy students get to visit this flower when they go on their exchange trip to Argentina.
For my project, I will draw the back, front, side, and top of the flower.
